April 24, 2005 | Track and Field

EUGENE, Ore. and Waco, Texas ?In late races in both cities Saturday, University of Colorado senior distance runner Sara Slattery won the women's 5,000-m run in a regional qualifying time at the Oregon Invitational while two time zones away sophomoresprinter George Pincock took runner-up finishes as the anchor leg of the CU's 400-m relay team, as the lead off leg of the mile relay, in the prelims of the 400-m dash and fourth in the finals at the Michael Johnson Classic.

In her first race on the track this year, Slattery returned to form by winning the women's seeded 5,000-m run.  Her time of 16 minutes 4.91 seconds was nearly seven seconds ahead of Arizona State's Amy Hastings (16:11.28) and is an NCAA regional qualifier.  It is also the second fastest time in the country this season and leads the Big 12 and NCAA Midwest Region.

That afternoon, freshman Micah Mosley ran a pr 3:57.58 in the unseeded 1,500-m run and finished 18th.  In the unseeded men's 5k, junior Austin Baillie ran his first outdoor 5k and finished third in a pr 14:23.38. His first race on the track since the 2004 Big 12 Championships, 2004 Oregon transfer Erik Heinonen also established a pr in the event on his old track, running 14:36.41 to finish ninth.  In his first 5k, freshman Chris Pannone finished 19th in a pr 14:58.81.

While the distance runners were in Eugene, the Buffs sent a contingent of sprinters and jumpers to Waco.

In the 100 and 200-m dashes, Sam Napp and Eric Lee-O'Brien turned in a pair of back-to-back finishes in both races.  Both ran to 11.08 100-m finishes with Napp crossing the line in 14th and Lee-O'Brien 15th while Napp (22.17) finished ninth in the 200-m and Lee-O'Brien (22.22) 10th in the 200-m.  In the 400-m, Pincock led a 2-7-8 Buff showing in the 400-m prelims before he finished fourth in the finals in 48.06, followed by Nate Terry (49.13) in fifth and Chris Abuan (49.15) in sixth.

Middle distance runner Derek Winton won his morning 800-m heat in 1:55.84 giving him the option to run the evening's invitational race in the same event, which he did, and capitalized on in a pr 1:53.26 to finish eighth.

Both Colorado men's relay teams took runner-up finishes as the Buff 400-m relay team of Chris Abuan, Napp, Lee-O'Brien and Pincock ran 41.60 to trail Texas and the mile relay combination of Pincock, Terry, Jason Zichterman and Abuan finished in 3:12.79 behind Baylor.

On the women's side, sophomore Jackie Sturm finished 17th in the 100-m dash in 12.59 before a pr 25.85 in the 200-m where she came in 20th.  In the field events, horizontal jumper Amberly Casey finished fifth in the long jump (19-00.00) and triple (38-1.50) while high jumper Anna Magle turned in a runner-up finish of her own with a 5-7.00 effort.

The only meet remaining on the calendar prior to this year's Big 12 Championships, May 13-15 in Manhattan, Kan., is the Cardinal Invitational on Sunday, May 1 in Stanford, Calif.
