Newlands Takes Jack Christiansen Shot Put Title

FORT COLLINS, Colo. ?In her hometown here Saturday, University of Colorado thrower Carly Newlands won her third shot put title of the outdoor season as the CU women finished fifth, and the men seventh at the Jack Christiansen Invitational, their first scored meet of the outdoor track and field season.

 

            Newlands had a throw of 46 feet, 7.25 inches, her second best of the season, to better Wyoming's Marji Bovey (44-7.00) by 2-0.25 feet for the victory.  She also finished seventh in the discus with a toss of 133-3.  In the other throws events, teammate Cortney Hutmacher finished eighth in the hammer throw with a 149-1 effort.  On the men's side, CU assistant coach Casey Malone won the men's discus in 197-6 and his pupil, Zach Hazen, finished eighth in 157-2.  Hazen (187-3) was also sixth in the hammer throw, behind Chase Mullen's fourth place 188-3.

 

            In remaining field events, Hannah Warfield-Ruffato was second in the javelin in a season best 148-8 and Megan Baker, sixth in the pole vault with a 10-0.00 jump.

 

            Sprinter Abe Freisen was one of two Buffs to double on the track, finishing 12th in the 100-m dash in a season best 11.47 and 14th in the 200-m in 22.85.  In the same race, Mark Ebert ran a personal best 23.77, finishing 21st and in the 400-m, Ebert finished 15th in a season best 51.71.  Middle distance runner Fort Collins native Daniel Kenney ran a 1:54.86 in his first 800-m run of the season and in his first-ever steeplechase, sophomore Greg Castro finished fourth in 10:32.04.

 

            Freshman middle distance runner Marissa Carhart ran a pr 2:26.39 to finish ninth in the 800-m while Kristen Hoogheem ran a pr 4:54.99 and finished ninth in the 1,500-m run. She paced teammates Laura Zeigle who finished 11th in a season best 4:56.69, Kelly Shuma (16th, 5:03.03) and Erin Marston (18th, 5:13.47) who ran their first 1,500 of the season Saturday.
