September 12, 2005 | Women's Golf
FORT COLLINS ? The University of Colorado women's golf team opened the 2005 season here Monday at the Ptarmigan Ram Classic, with the Buffaloes ending the day in 10th place after two rounds of play.
Baylor holds the team lead through 36 holes with a 12-under par team score of 564. The Bears have distanced themselves from the rest of the field, as second place
CU head coach Anne Kelly wasn't thrilled with her team's first outing of the season, but she was pleased with their resolve heading into tomorrow's rounds.
“Obviously, this is not the start to the season that I expected,” said Kelly. “We took second in this tournament last year, so I'm a little disappointed, I'm a little shocked, but the good news is that the team is too. I like the attitude I saw from them after they came in today. They aren't happy either.”
The big bright spot for Kelly's Buffaloes was the play of freshman Lindsay Caljouw, who can lay claim to CU's low round today, an even par 72 in her second outing. It is a solid debut for the first year player, particularly since she rallied from 5-over par on her back nine with birdies on five of her last eight holes to close out at even par. That combined with her morning round of 76 gave her a score of 148, good for a tie for 21st.
“I'm really pleased with Lindsay's resolve and determination this afternoon,” Kelly said. “She really showed me a lot today to hit the shots she did to pull to even par. She's going to be quite a player. It takes a tournament or two to get used to college golf but I think we'll see some good things from her.”
Colorado's second lowest tally on the day came from senior Maria Perrson-Gulda, who carded a one-over 73 in the morning and followed that up with a six-over 78 for a total of 151, placing her in a tie for 32nd.
Junior Hannah Hoch did not get her third year off to the start she expected, struggling to six-over in both the morning and afternoon rounds. Hoch started off with a pair of pars and a birdie in her second round, but a triple bogey on number 12 pushed her to five-over in the afternoon and she wasn't able to rebound.
“Hannah didn't play well, and when your number one doesn't play well it doesn't help,” said Kelly. “When she has trouble rallying, her teammates need to step it up. Hopefully we will see that tomorrow. She played the front nine even in the morning, so hopefully she'll get it going there on Tuesday.”
Jessie Malcolm (77-80?157) and Cierra Ko (79-81?160) rounded out the
The Big 12 Conference owns five of the top six spots on the individual leader board, with Baylor's Josefin Svenningson firing a 70-68?138 to lead the field. She is just two strokes ahead of teammate Sian Reddick, who had the tournament's low round with a 67 in the afternoon after a morning round of 73, good for 140 on the day.
The Buffaloes tee off at Ptarmigan at 8:30 on Tuesday morning and will try to rally back into top five contention. CU golf fans can follow the action at www.golfstat.com.
