Cross Country Starts Season At Time Trial

BOULDER - The University of Colorado cross country teams opened up their 2005 season by hosting the CU Time Trial today at the Buffalo Ranch Cross Country Course. The men's team finished first ahead of Colorado School of Mines and Metropolitan State College of Denver while the women finished ahead of Colorado School of Mines.
“The races went well for our purposes,” CU Head Coach Mark Wetmore said. “I think compare to what we have done here in the past, I have to factor in that I think the course is in a little better condition than past years at this time. But also, that is was definitely hotter this year than a year ago. So, the fact that I think we ran a little faster in both of the races, might mean that our seventh or eight runners are little better than a year ago.”
Freshman Chris Pannone paced the Buffalo men and took the top spot with a time of 26 minutes and 26 seconds. CU took the top eight spots in the trial, which were only separated by three seconds, with Payton Batliner and Stephen Pifer finishing just one second behind Pannone. Billy Nelson, Bret Schoolmeester, Bradley Harkrader and Pete Janson finished with 26 minutes and 28 seconds while James Strang (26:29) came in eighth.
“The men were suppose to get it down to eight (runners) and they did it perfectly. They were looking around, talking, checking the splits and they came on in easily,” Wetmore said.
On the women's side, Colorado School of Mines' Hannah Davey (22:56) took the top spot for the second consecutive year and Sitges Manning (22:59) came in second. Freshmen Rachel Gioscia and Jenny Barringer tied for third (23:13) for CU. The Buffaloes had four more in the top 10 with Laura Zeigle (23:13), Kristen Hoogheem (23:14), Christine Bolf (23:14) and Shanna Sparks (23:49).
“The women were suppose to get it down to five (runners) and try not to go much faster than 23:30, so that is what they did,” Wetmore added.
The cross country teams officially kick off their seasons on October 1 with the 20th annual Rocky Mountain Shootout at Buffalo Ranch.
