Milewski Marches on to Central Region Quarterfinals

SALT LAKE CITY, Utah ? University of Colorado sophomore Monica Milewski earned two victories on Friday in the 2006 Wilson/ITA Central Region Women's Tennis Championships, and will be the lone Buffalo representative remaining in the main draw as competition opens on Saturday.
The five-day regional runs from Oct. 18 through Sunday, Oct. 22 at the Eccles Tennis Center, and features 120 participants from 16 college teams across the region, hosted at the University of Utah.
Milewski earned her eighth and ninth wins on the young season, opening her day with a dominating 6-2, 6-3 victory over Patricia Ruman (Idaho) in the Round of 32. Milewski would take the court less than two hours later and continue her winning ways, posting a 6-1, 7-5 victory over Corina Lazar (Wyoming). Milewski will take the court tomorrow morning at 9:00 a.m., as she squares off against Anastasia Surkova (BYU) in the Central Region quarterfinals.
Milewski was the only Buffalo to advance on to Saturday in the main draw, but wasn't the only one to find some success. Fellow sophomore Franziska Jendrian defeated Bianca Jochimsen (Boise State) 6-4, 6-2 in the Round of 32 to open her day. She did not find the same success in her second match of the day, falling to Elizabeth Ferris (Utah) 6-3, 6-2 in the Round of 16.
Earlier in the day, Ferris ended CU senior Martina Sedivec's day as she defeated her 6-3, 6-2 in the Round of 32. Also falling in the Round of 32 was junior Veera Nurmi 7-6, 1-6, 6-4 to Sandra Zmack (New Mexico).
In doubles, the team of Jendrian/Milewski struggled in their contest, coming up on the short end of an 8-2 loss against Mari Castello/Liz Walker (Montana) in the Round of 16. Also, the duo of Victoria Almagno/Nurmi could not make it out of the Round of 16 either, suffering an 8-4 loss to Jenny Miccoli/Anastasia Surkova (BYU).
Saturday features the quarterfinals and semifinals of all draws beginning at 9:00 a.m. The consolation and championship final of both singles and doubles will take place Sunday at 10:00 a.m.
