Milewski Loses Heartbreaker in Regional Quarters

SALT LAKE CITY, Utah ? As daybreak approached on Saturday at the 2006 Wilson/ITA Central Region Women's Tennis Championships, University of Colorado sophomore Monica Milewski looked to pick up where she had left off, with dominant wins throughout the entire tournament. Milewski looked true to form to open her quarterfinal match against Anastasia Surkova (BYU), taking the first set 7-5 in a hard-fought battle.
But, Surkova would not go down without a fight, and ultimately proved to be too much for the resilient Milewski. Surkova would end up winning the next two sets, and the match, 5-7, 6-0, 6-4.
Milewski had reached the quarterfinals with relative ease, having not come close to even losing a single set throughout the main draw. But, looking for her tenth win in twelve matches, she was unable to overcome BYU's Surkova.
Milewski leaves the tournament in the same fashion she did as a freshman, going 3-1 after being eliminated in the quarterfinals. Overall, she is now 9-3 on the year.
The loss officially ends the tournament for the Buffs, as senior Martina Sedivec and junior Veera Nurmi were eliminated in the Round of 32, while sophomore Franziska Jendrian was knocked out in the Round of 16. In doubles, both duos of Victoria Almagno/Nurmi and Jendrian/Milewski were defeated in the Round of 16.
The five-day regional runs from Oct. 18 through Sunday, Oct. 22 at the Eccles Tennis Center, and features 120 participants from 16 college teams across the region, while being hosted at the University of Utah. Sunday features the consolation and championship finals for both singles and doubles, starting at 10:00 a.m.
