February 27, 2006 | Women's Golf
FRESNO, Calif. ?The University of Colorado women's golf team teed off their first tournament of the spring here Monday afternoon with a 18th place finish in the first round of the Fresno State Kitihara Invitational here at the Copper River Country Club. UC Irvine leads the tournament with a first round score of 285, while the Buffaloes shot 318.
CU's top golfer a year ago, Hannah Hoch, had a solid front nine, shooting 37, and was doing well on the back until winds of 50 miles per hour started to kick up. She put up a triple bogey on No. 16, which pushed her two-over par at that point. She finished with a three-over par 75 on the day as the top finisher for the Buffs.
“Hannah had it going really well, until the wind started blowing and it was really raining and we were in the later groups and she was our last golfer out there,” said head coach Anne Kelly. “She was one under par heading into 16 when the wind and rain kicked up, and then she finished the last three with a triple bogey, a par and a bogey. So that pushed her to three over. But she was playing well and hopefully we'll see more of that tomorrow.”
Hoch was followed by senior Maria Persson-Gulda, who posted a five-over par 77 on the day. She sits in a tie for 44th place overall with one round left to play. Sophomore Charlotte Persson-Gulda posted solid front-to-back improvement, going from 43 on the front to posting a solid 38 on the back to finish with 81 and tied for 73rd. She made it into the clubhouse before the weather intervened.
Sophomore Lindsay Senger shot a 44-41-85, with junior Lindsay Koth posting a 40-45-85. Both are tied for 93rd overall. The Buffs are without the services of their fall stroke-average leader, freshman Lindsay Caljouw, as she is at home in
“It's tough without Caljouw, but the flu thing is going around so there's not much you can do about that,” said Kelly. “Today's round took six hours, which is obviously really tough, so hopefully with the different format tomorrow (teeing off on No. 1 and No. 10) we can get through the round faster and avoid having to play through weather on the last nine holes.”
The second and final round of the Fresno State Kitihara Invitational will get underway at 9 a.m. MST. The Buffaloes will tee off on Tuesday beginning with Lindsay Senger at 9:24 a.m.
