CU Earns 10 Qualifying Marks At Stanford Invite
April 30, 2006 | Track and Field
“We come out here because of good conditions and great fields; expecting fast performances and for the most part we got that here tonight,” Colorado Head Coach Mark Wetmore said.
Bret Schoolmeester, Brent Vaughn, Stephen Pifer, Chris Pannone and Christine Bolf all earned qualifying marks in the 5k. In the men's first section, Schoolmeester took fourth (13:39.81), Vaughn earned an eighth-place finish (13:44.79) and Pifer took 11th (13:48.45). Schoolmeester's mark is currently the seventh best in the nation. Pannone took sixth in the second group and recorded a mark of 14:09.40. Bolf took 12th on the women's side with a mark of 15:56.13.
“A great race for the guys in the seeded section of the 5,000, Schoolmeester, Vaughn and Stephen Pifer's debut,” Wetmore said. “All regional times in that group and pr's for Bret and Stephen. A good run for Christine in the 5, her outdoor pr, but not her fastest ever, which was done indoors. But she's feeling a lot better than she was a month ago in the NCAA's when she was really disappointed and feeling flat.
“A real nice little race at the end of the night for Chris Pannone and Erik Heinonen. They ran into some windy conditions last week in Eugene so we decided last minute to make another attempt and they both improved by 10 seconds. Really well run races and good pr's for both of them.”
Erik Heinonen just missed qualifying as he crossed the finish in 14:10.40 and took eighth in the second group. The regional mark is 14:10.00.
The Buffs recorded two more of those regional times in the men's and women's 3,000-meter steeplechase. Jenny Barringer recorded the 12th best time in the event for a CU woman in 10:19.08 and took sixth. This was the first time Barringer had run the event as a Buff and becomes the fourth best all-time performer. Payton Batliner also took sixth in the second section (9:06.42) and finished just under the regional cut off in the event of 9:07.00.
“A very good run for Jenny Barringer in her steeplechase debut,” Wetmore said. “The fastest steeple debut ever at
Liza Pasciuto took seventh in the women's 1,500. She recorded a time of 4:27.24. The mark is the second regional qualifying time for Pasciuto in the event.
Starting today we had a really good run for Anthony Chiulli in the 1,500. A nice couple second pr for him, lowering his regional qualifying time by two seconds.
Derek Winton took ninth in the second section of the 800 with a time of 1:54.97.
The Buffs will be back in action on May 5 when they travel to the Air Force Academy for the Ris-Western Air Force Twilight Invitational. The field events start at 3 p.m. and the running events begin at 4 p.m.
