Tennis Pair Advances

TULSA, Okla. ? A pair of University of Colorado women's tennis singles players won their opening round matches advancing to Friday's Round of 32 at the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Central Region hosted by the University of Tulsa.

Senior Gleisy Torres Torres and sophomore Melisa Esposito each won their opening round match Thursday afternoon in straight sets. Torres Torres won her fourth straight match, third in a row in the last two days defeating Amear Chandronnait of Nebraska, 6-1, 6-2. Torres Torres will play 11^th seeded Iryna Tkachenko of Oklahoma State.

The win also moves Torres Torres into 18^th place on the CU all-time victories list with 62.

Esposito defeated Tabatha Knopp of Northern Colorado, 6-4, 6-1 for her seventh win in nine outings this fall. Esposito will play 16^th seeded Lenore Lazariou of Wichita State.

A pair of other CU singles players fell on Thursday in three sets as Kansas State's Viviana Yruetha edged Camila Belassi 6-3, 0-6, 6-4; and Boise State's Bianca Jochimsen upset No. 31 Monica Milewski 6-2, 1-6, 6-3.

In doubles, Milewski and Franziska Jendrian won both their matches advancing to the Round of 16 main draw. The CU pair playing together for the first time this year after winning a team-high 19 matches a year ago, defeated Stephanie Jasper/Laura Villegas of Montana State, 8-4 in the opening Round of 64, then upset 16^th seed Chrissy Svetic/Mallory Weber of Missouri, 8-5.

Dating back to last year, Milewski/Jendrian have won eight straight matches, nine of their last 10.

The five-day event runs from October 17-21 and is hosted by the Golden Hurricane at the Michael D. Case Tennis Center on the TU campus.

The Buffaloes have a split squad this weekend with Victoria Almagno and Christiane Pheil participating at the New Mexico Invitational. Both teamed up in Thursday's only doubles action defeating Costa/Discordia of New Mexico State, 8-1. Almagno/Pheil are 2-0 this fall playing together.
