Women's Golf Sixth at Fresno State Invite

February 27, 2007 | Women's Golf

FRESNO, Calif. ? The University of Colorado women's golf team was unable to rally here Tuesday afternoon and slipped back one spot into a tie for sixth place at the Kitihara Fresno State Invitational at the Copper River Country Club.

In the team standings, host Fresno State rallied from a two-stroke deficit to win with a 299-297?596 total.  They overtook UC Irvine, who led after one day (297-301?598), and held off a hard charging Hawai'i squad who shot a 295, the best round of the tournament (303-295?298).  Long Beach State was fourth (306-299?605) followed by Kansas State (314-295?609) and Colorado (308-306?614).

“We're just so close, just a few improvements away from winning one of these again,” said CU head coach Anne Kelly.  “We have a lot of good things to reflect on; especially what Caljouw and Domi did this week.  It just shows that you once again with mediocre play we are still in contention. We have more than one player on this team that can win a tournament and I think we'll see it happen soon.  Caljouw and Domi were really competing against a great field of western region teams and I'm happy with that.”

On the individual side, sophomore Lindsay Caljouw shot a one-over par 73 and her two round total of 157 rallied her from seventh place after the first round to second place in the tournament, her best finish of the year and tying CU's best overall individual finish of the year.  She lost by just one stroke to Kay Hoey of Long Beach State, who also started in seventh place.

“Well I double bogeyed the first hole which wasn't great, but I wasn't going to let that bother me,” said Caljouw.  “I kept it going and would birdie then bogey, and it's frustrating because I threw away about three shots. I could have won it easily if not for that.  My putter is still working for me, and my approach shots were good today as well.”

“For awhile there I thought Cali was going to win it,” said Kelly.  “She was very close and I knew she was in the mix, and a shot here or there and she walks away the medalist.  She played well today and I'm proud of how she settled down after her first hole and played well.”

Caljouw was followed by freshman Dominique Pytlewski, who shot 72 in the first round but struggled on the front nine to five-over and then posted a pair of double-bogeys on 16 and 18 to shoot 81 for a two day total of 153.  She finished just outside of the top 20 in 21st place, but that ties the best finish of her young career.  However that was a less than acceptable result in her estimation.

“Well I bogeyed the first four holes so that was a pretty bad start today,” said Pytlewski.  “Coach calmed me down and things got much better on the back until the last three holes.  I'm pretty frustrated and disappointed about that.  It all comes down to short game, short game, short game and finishing.  But at least Lindsay (Caljouw) played some good solid golf today so we can be happy about that.”

Freshman Christine Kim posted a six-stroke improvement from the first round to the second, shooting 75.  She was three over on the front, and posted a pair of birdie-bogey combinations on the back nine to stay at even par on the second nine and a two day total of 156.  Classmate Julie Kim shot 77 as she was two-over on the front and three-over on the back.  She shot 158 for the tournament, good for 55th place.

Senior Hannah Hoch struggled for the second consecutive round, mostly on the back nine.  She made the turn at three-over for the day, but four bogeys and two double bogeys on the back with just one birdie put her to 10-over 81 for the day and a two-day total of 83-81-164.

“We got good improvement from Christine and Julie today,” said Kelly.  “Hannah didn't have a good tournament but she's a strong player so it will come.  She hit it better today than she has lately.”

Lindsay Senger played as an individual and after an opening round 78, she fell to an 81 in round two and a total of 159, good for a tie for 63rd.

“As a team, we pulled it together better today and kept a positive attitude,” said Caljouw.  “There's more room for improvement for all of us, and that includes me.”

Colorado will have a week off from tournament play before returning to action on March 5-6 at the San Jose State Invitational.
