March 04, 2007 | Tennis
The win improves CU is its best start in Big 12 Conference play (3-0) and their 7-3 start after 10 matches mirrors their last NCAA Tournament team in 2002-03.
“We had a tough loss on Friday (4-3 loss at BYU) and I told the girls after the match the important thing is the good teams come back whether they have a tough loss or a close win, and that's my challenge to come out on Sunday and compete your butts off, and that's what they did,” said CU head coach Nicole Kenneally.
With CU holding a 3-2 lead in singles play, junior Gleisy Torres Torres took matters in her own hands at the No. 5 slot defeating Klara Zrustova 7-6(1), 6-3 for CU's first win over a top-15 opponent in the eight years under Coach Kenneally.
The win is also CU's first win over Baylor since April 25, 2003 (Big 12 Tournament) and the program's biggest win over a top-15 opponent since defeating No. 13 Kansas at the Big 12 Tournament on April 25, 1998.
The duo of Melisa Esposito and Martina Sedivec won their fourth match of the spring taking an 8-6 winner over Iva Mihaylova and Jessica Zok. Esposito/Sedivec surged ahead for a 4-1 lead, only to have Baylor rally and subsequently take a 5-4 lead. However, CU stormed back winning the next four of five points.
At No. 2 doubles, Franziska Jendrian and Monica Milewski also took an early 5-1 lead, then stayed ahead for the remaining match for an 8-5 win. It was Jendrian/Milewski's seventh win in nine outings this spring.
In singles, Baylor evened the team score at one taking the No. 2 position and seconds later, CU's Milewski put the home team back in the lead winning her fifth straight match and eighth of the spring defeating Zuzana Cerna, 6-4, 6-4.
The Bears answered back taking the No. 3 singles slot.
With the match tied at two, Jendrian pushed CU closer to the upset, defeating Zuzana Chmelarova, 7-5, 6-0 in straight sets. Jendrian has won four of her last five matches earning her seventh dual match victory setting up Torres Torres' antics at the No. 5 slot.
“During my freshman year, I clinched my first-ever match and was having flashbacks of that,” said Torres Torres, who won her eighth match of the dual season. “Today was the best clinching match I've ever had in my college career.”
Esposito rounded out the scoring at No. 6 finishing off the Bears for the final 5-2 tally, defeating Jana Bielikova 6-4, 3-6, 1-0(4). It was Esposito's eighth win of the season.
CU travels to Missouri, Saturday, March 10 for a 1 p.m. (MST) start and returns to Boulder for a pair of home matches against Oklahoma State (March 12) and The College of William and Mary (March 14). Both matches are at the Millennium Harvest House with the OSU match beginning at Noon and W&M match at 2 p.m.
