Women's Golf Falls to Ninth at Big 12
April 17, 2007 | Women's Golf
WACO, Texas ? The University of Colorado women's golf team did not respond well to the elements here in the second round of the 2007 Big 12 Women's Golf Championship, and shot their worst round of the year at 324, dropping them into ninth place with a two day total of 632.
CU head coach Anne Kelly was blunt with her assessment of the day's rounds for her Buffaloes, but was hopeful that earlier performances from this year will reappear in the final round on Wednesday.
“We had a bad day, we really did, we played ourselves right out of contention,” said Kelly. “But I told the team not to let the bad day ruin all the good stuff we've accomplished this year and to remember what they are capable of. They were definitely disappointed. It was raining for part of the day and cold all day and we didn't handle it at all.”
Kelly's appraisal of the day was decidedly accurate for the Buffs as a team. CU was 36-over par for the day, their worst round of the year by eight strokes, the previous high being a 316 in the third round of the Heather Farr Memorial in October. In spite of that, there continues to be a pair of Buffs in top 10 contention in senior Hannah Hoch and sophomore Lindsay Caljouw.
The veteran pair of Buffs both shot 79, to bring their two day total to 76-79-155. They are each tied for 13th in the standings and are just two shots out of the top five in the individual standings.
“Today actually worked out really well I just three putted a lot,” said Caljouw. “I got myself out of sticky situations all day with great saves and then rewarded myself with a three putt. That was very frustrating because I could have posted a great score for the team. It was maybe a little more windy than yesterday and I have to admit the greens were really, really hard. You couldn't just hit the green you had to place it where you wanted it to be. So it wasn't just us that struggled as a group it was the field. I think with some adjustments to the way the course is playing we can all get it sorted out.”
Caljouw and Hoch were followed by junior Lindsay Senger, who shot an 81 to give her a two day total of 161. Unfortunately, the typically reliable rookie duo of
“The freshmen finally played like freshmen I guess, which they haven't done all year and I guess it was their day to do that. It just was bad timing to have it happen to both of them,” said Kelly.
“That's a fair assessment of the day I had,” said Pytlewski. “I'm trying to make my game better and I'm in an awkward stage with that. I just am working on my swing and I want it to be fixed and it's going to take patience and time, which I don't have. The changes in my game are glaring right now because you have to be accurate out here so that was the story of my day. I'm upset and disappointed. I knew everyone would struggle with the conditions today and I wanted to contribute. I sure didn't plan on contributing that score. This is an important tournament for us for regionals and I would have liked to have done more for the team.”
“One rough day isn't going to ruin what we've done all spring, and what (the freshmen) have done all spring, and we still have tomorrow to make a comeback,” said Kelly. “Our goal is to go out there and hit some good shots and reel some teams in.”
The Buffs will have a chance to right Tuesday's wrongs on Wednesday. The Buffaloes will again be paired with
