Women's Golf Takes Third at Ram Classic

September 11, 2007 | Women's Golf

FORT COLLINS ? The University of Colorado women's golf team fell just short in their attempt to rally and defend their title here Tuesday and slipped back one spot to finish in a tie for third place at the Ptarmigan Ram Fall Classic.

In the team standings, California didn't budge after their 11 shot lead going into the third round and shot their best round of the tournament today, finishing one-under in the third round to win with a 288-293-287?868 total. They were followed by No. 40 Washington State (298-295-294?887) who shot a 294 in the third round but still remained 19 back. Colorado (300-292-299?891), despite a huge second round turnaround yesterday, tied with No. 13 Brigham Young (299-297-295?891) in third place.

“It's nice to be disappointed with third place,” said head coach Anne Kelly. “Our girls are not content with a third place finish. A few years ago we would have been happy with it, so that just shows how far this team has come.”

On the individual side, sophomore Dominique Pytlewski shot a one-under par 71 and her three round total of 218 rallied her from a tie in 10th place after the first two rounds to fifth place in the tournament, her best finish and three-round total in her career. Pytlewski's 71 in the third round also marked the first time in her collegiate career that she finished one-under, besting her low of an even-par 72 on two different occasions last year.

“Domi had a great day and played really solid golf,” said Kelly. “To have Domi finish fifth and Julie (Kim) behind her in sixth is pretty good.”

Pytlewski was followed by sophomore Julie Kim, who was three-under through 15 holes today but struggled on the last three holes with a bogey and a triple bogey to close out her third round. Kim wrapped up the first two rounds in a tie for fifth but dropped one spot and finished sixth behind Pytlewski with a two day total of 219.

Senior Lindsay Senger, despite playing to par on 12 holes in the third round, had a challenging second day and slipped into a tie for 29th after posting six bogeys. Senger was three-over on both the front and back nine, finishing with a score of 78. That, combined with her scores yesterday, gave her a total of 74-73-78?225.

“It hurts in situations like this when Senger has an off day,” said Kelly. “We really need five scorers. But even with Senger getting off to a bad start in both the first and third rounds, she battled and it really shows what a competitor she is.”

Freshman Stephanie Simich struggled for the second time in her first collegiate tournament, mostly on the back nine. She started off the third round even through the front nine, but four bogeys and one double bogey on the back with just one birdie put her to five-over 77 for the day. Simich's two day total of 79-74-77?230 was good for a tie for 42nd place.

“I saw great things in Stephanie this tournament,” said Kelly. “She really got a good taste of what college golf is all about and she's fired up. She's ready to work on a few things and take it into the next one.”

Junior Cierra Ko wrapped things up for the Buffaloes, shooting 246 for the tournament and finishing in 92nd place

“We're going to work on a lot of wedge play and our putting game before the next tournament,” said Kelly. “Overall, I think they played pretty tough and I'm pleased with a lot of things that they did.”

The Buffaloes will now have just a few days to get some work in and prepare for the Ron Moore Denver Invitational in Highlands Ranch on September 17-18.
