HIGHLANDS RANCH, Colo. ? The University of Colorado women's golf team improved two spots and finished 14th, shooting the team's tournament best score of 296 in the last round at the 2007 Ron Moore Women's Intercollegiate.
Host Denver won the tournament with a combined score of 886, and a tournament best round in the final cycle of play with a 288. DU was followed by Baylor (895), Iowa State (897), San Jose State (898), and Tulsa (904) to round out the top five. On the individual side, Denver's Stephanie Sherlock held onto her lead from the first day and finished with a three-under total score of 213.
Sophomore Julie Kim led the Buffaloes, finishing in a tie for 18th at eight strokes over par (224). She shot a one-under par 71 on the final day, playing to three-under through 15 holes before bogeys in two out of her last three holes. Included in Kim's three-over 75 in the second round was an eagle on her final hole.
Kim was followed by senior Lindsay Senger and freshman Stephanie Simich, who tied for 43rd place at fifteen over par (231). Senger shot 73 in her final round, besting her second round score by nine strokes. Simich tied her career low of 74 in the third round, playing to one-under through 13 holes until three bogeys in a row set her back to finish two-over.
“We just made a lot of bad mistakes,” said sophomore Dominique Pytlewski. “It's acceptable to make a few mistakes per round but in general our team missed a lot of short putts and it really started to hurt us. It was great that Julie, Lindsay and Stephanie had a good third round but overall we weren't very happy with how we played.”
Pytlewski was twenty shots over par (236) with a final round 78, which left her tied for 64th. Cierra Ko rounded out the Colorado scorecard shooting a total score of 252. Freshman walk-on Jessica Milner participated as an individual and opened her first collegiate round with birdies in two out of her first four holes and finished the round with a total of 83. She started the second round, but withdrew.
“We really struggled this week,” said Senger. “It was great to see Julie play three rounds of solid golf. It shows a lot that we're all really unhappy with how we played this week and once we work on our putting and eliminate some of our mistakes we should be prepared for our tournament in two weeks.”
Colorado will have the next two weeks off from tournament play and then will be back on the course for their home tournament, the Heather Farr Memorial/CU Invitational. The tournament will tee off on Monday, Oct. 1 with 36 holes at the Omni Interlocken Golf Course in Broomfield. On Tuesday, Oct. 2 they will play the final 18 holes.
