Tebo Takes Fourth in 10k

Tebo Takes Fourth in 10k

May 15, 2009 | Track and Field

LUBBOCK, Texas ? University of Colorado sophomore Matt Tebo ran to a fourth-place finish in the men's 10,000-meter run on the opening day of the 13th Annual Big 12 Track & Field Championship on Friday.

Tebo finished with a time of 30 minutes, 48.60 seconds. This is the second straight year that Tebo has scored for the Buffs in the 10k. In 2008 he took third when CU earned the top five spots in the race.

Freshman Andy Wacker just missed scoring for the Buffs with a ninth-place finish. He crossed the line in 31:30.83 in his 10k debut.

Tebo and Wacker started off the race in the front of the pack and went back and forth in the lead. They were 1-2 until Oklahoma State's Alejandro Ruiz moved into second place about 4,000-meters into the race; Tebo was still in first and Wacker had moved to fourth.

Wacker moved back up into the lead around the midway point. The two Buffs fell back to fourth (Tebo) and sixth (Wacker) after 6,400-meters. Tebo would continue to hold on to fourth place for the remainder of the race. He kept up with the top three finishers but was unable to pass any of them in the final 800 meters.

Junior Patrick Bachmann recorded a pair of points for Colorado in the men's hammer throw and became the fifth best performer in the event at CU. Bachmann took seventh overall with a personal record of 189 feet, three inches; the farthest throw this season for a Buff.

Bachmann's throw was also a regional mark; making him the third thrower for the Buffs to qualify for the regional meet in two weeks (Chase Dukes has qualified in the hammer as well and Brandin Williams in the javelin).

The hammer throw was delayed 45 minutes with winds gusting up to 40 miles per hour at the site. The event was moved from the first throwing cage to a second when the first almost fell over.

“The wind really affects athletes in the ring, not the flight of the hammer itself,” assistant coach Casey Malone said. “Even within those conditions Patrick PR'd by over three meters. He's peaking at the right time.”

Freshman Alyssa Frank led the CU women in the heptathlon in the afternoon. Frank is 10th after the first four events with 2,766 points. Brianne Beemer is currently 11th (2,640) and Katie Dreher is 12th (2,442). Nebraska's Megan Wheatley is in first with 3,551 points.

All three Buffs had a great day as they recorded personal bests in several events. Alyssa Frank tied for first with Wheatley in the high jump after recording a height of 5 feet, 6.5 inches. Frank raced to an 11th-place finish in the 100-meter hurdles (15.54/PR) and a pair of 12th-place finishes in the 200-meter dash (27.47/PR) and shot put (27-4 3/4).

Beemer led the Buffs in three of the four events. She was 10th in the 100 hurdles (15.43/PR), eighth in the shot put (32-3/PR) and 10th in the 200 (26.31/PR). Beemer also recorded a 12th-place finish in the high jump with a height of 4-09.

Dreher completed the great day in the heptathlon for CU. She recorded personal bests in the 100 hurdles with a mark of 16.22 and the 200 with a time of 27.47 (both12th place). Dreher was 11th in the high jump (4-10 ?) and 12th in the shot put (27-04 ?).

“Each of them came out and performed like upper classmen today,” assistant coach Lindsey Malone said. “Ideally it's nice to come out and record PRs in every meet, but it's especially great to do it at the conference meet. Each of the three kept rising to the occasion. They were having fun and you could tell that. Tomorrow should be a good and busy day for all three and I'm really excited to see how they will do.”

The Big 12 Track & Field Championship will continue on Saturday and Sunday in Lubbock. For complete results, please go to www.flashresults.com.
