Beemer Advances To 400-Meter Hurdle Finals

LUBBOCK, Texas ? University of Colorado freshman Brianne Beemer advanced to the finals in the 400-meter hurdles at the 13th Annual Big 12 Track & Field Championship on Saturday.
Beemer earned her spot in the finals by recording a time of 1 minute, 2.53 seconds. It was the eighth best time overall, but was third in her heat. The frosh also took 10th in the heptathlon earlier in the day with a career-best 4,415 points. Beemer took 12th in the long jump with a PR of 15 feet, 6 ? inches, over seven inches past her previous top mark. She was ninth in the javelin with a toss of 89-07. Beemer won the 800-meter run, the final event in the heptathlon, in 2:17.40. She also won the 800 at the indoor conference championship in the pentathlon.
“The highlight today was Brianne advancing in the hurdles,” head coach Mark Wetmore said. “She ran well technically, but more importantly she had just finished the heptathlon earlier and concluded it under really difficult conditions. The javelin was so cold, rainy and unpleasant and at one point there was wonder how it would be finished under those conditions. She bounced back after completing that to advance in the hurdles.”
"Brianne competed in the heptathlon for two very long days in the wind and rain,” assistant coach Lindsey Malone said. “Just five hours after running her seventh event, she ran the 400 hurdles for the third time in her career. She ran her heart out to secure a spot in the finals. Making the finals at the Big 12 championships is an enormous accomplishment; especially as a freshman. I am very excited to see her compete tomorrow after having an opportunity to rest and recover." Alyssa Frank recorded a personal best in the heptathlon with 4,283 points, which was good for 11th as well as qualifying her for junior nationals in June. Katie Dreher was 12th with 4,150 points.
In the field, Kaity Kark launched a throw of 155-06 in the women's discus on her third toss of the day. She finished ninth overall and was just three feet out of scoring for the Buffs. Katie Vanarsdall (Missouri) took the final scoring spot with a throw of 158-08. Kark's toss was also a regional mark, the first of her career, and she will compete in the NCAA Midwest Regional May 29-30 in Norman, Okla.
The Big 12 Track & Field Championship will conclude on Sunday in Lubbock. It should be a good day for the Buffs with finals set in the 3,000-meter steeplechase and 5,000-meter run as well as several finals in the field events.
“We do have people in some other events that are straight up finals that we hope will do well tomorrow,” Wetmore said. “We have one day to go and hope to do well in those events.”
