BOULDER-The University of Colorado women's tennis team wrapped up their three-game home-stand defeating the University of Kansas, 6-1 at the South Campus Courts.
The Buffaloes, coming off two straight conference victories, earned their third straight win improving to 10-8 on the season and 3-4 in Big 12 play. Kansas still holds the series record at 24-17; however, CU has now won the last five matches in a row between the two schools.
After winning two of the three doubles matches, Colorado entered singles play leading 1-0. At the No. 3 doubles slot, freshman Erin Sanders and senior teammate Melisa Esposito were the first pair off the court, defeating Dzuba/Martinez, 8-4.
Shortly after Monica Milewski and Ania Anuszkiewicz fell 8-4 at the No. 1 doubles position, sophomore Michala Hedelund Jensen and junior Abbie Probert clinched the doubles point by edging KU's Dorn/Lazarevic, 9-8 in a thrilling match decided by a 7-2 tie-breaker. Hedelund Jensen and Probert have now won seven of their last eight doubles matches.
With a one-point advantage heading into singles play, the Buffaloes looked to capitalize early and often in order to secure the victory. Esposito finished first winning in solid fashion 6-3, 6-1 to secure her 80th career singles win. The victory moves Esposito up to No. 3 on the all-time total wins list (155).
Hedelund Jensen continued the Buffs strong play, winning her third conference match defeating Kuni Dorn, 6-2, 6-4, giving the Buffaloes a 3-0 advantage.
Milewski, the No. 95th nationally ranked player secured the Buffaloes victory for the 15th time in her career defeating Ekaterina Morozova, 6-1, 7-5. Milewski, who set the all-time total wins record on Friday, continued her spring dominance winning her 87 career singles match, and a school-record 163 combined wins.
Milewski's victory gives her 12 singles triumphs for the spring, and remaining unbeaten in Big 12 play at 5-0. Milewski's team-best 12 victories are tied with Esposito for the team lead. Milewski has now won 10 of her last 11 singles matches.
With the match already won, CU looked to finish strong. Probert, after being down 3-0 in both sets, rallied to win both, recording a 6-3, 7-5 winner over Maria Martinez for her 14th win of the year. Sanders also contributed to the winning effort, winning her second straight Big 12 match getting past Erin Wilbert, 7-6 (4), 3-6, 1-0 (10).
"We continue to take it one day at a time," said CU head coach Nicole Kenneally. "After practice tomorrow (Monday) and the day off on Tuesday, we should feel good heading into our next couple matches on the road. We are often times the underdog, but we continue to put ourselves in a position to where we can win against tough opponents. I am really proud of the way we have played, but there is still a lot of work to do before the Big 12 Championships."
The Buffaloes play their next two matches on the road against Texas Tech (April 16th) and against the No. 1 ranked team in the nation, Baylor on April 18th. The Buffs will return to Boulder on April 23rd, where they will face 41st-ranked Texas A&M.
