Neuman Takes Second In 10K

May 14, 2010 | Track and Field

COLUMBIA, Mo. — University of Colorado senior Kenyon Neuman turned in a strong performance in the 10,000-meter run to help the Buffs get out to a great start on the first day of the Big 12 Outdoor Track & Field Championship at the Aubrey J. Walton Stadium in Columbia, Mo.

Neuman recorded a second-place finish with a time of 29 minutes, 25.06 seconds, less than one second behind Oklahoma State's John Kosgei who broke the tape in 29:24.21 en route to setting a stadium record. Neuman's time was also faster than the previous record of 29:29.53, which was set by Saul Lempirikany in 1998.

“He ran very well today,” Colorado coach Mark Wetmore said. “This was definitely his best race in a year.”

This was Neuman's first 10k since winning the Big 12 title in 2008 since he redshirted the 2009 season.

CU took six of the top nine places in the race, including five in the top eight to score 18 points. Richard Medina was fifth with a personal best (29:28.18). With his performance, he equaled his placing at the 2008 championship in Boulder. That year he ran a mark of 30:44.47 (at altitude).

“I'm a little disappointed,” Medina said. “I had a couple of guys outkick me at the end. I wish that they were Colorado guys since it's never fun to get outkicked, but now I'm just going to think about the 5k in a couple of days.”

A very pleasant surprise in the race was Joe Bosshard, who debuted in the 10k. The redshirt freshman earned a sixth-place finish after racing to a time of 29:31.68.

“We had not planned for him to be a 10k runner this year,” Wetmore said. “But after looking at his regional mark in the 5k and the likely weather two nights from now, we [Wetmore and assistant coach Heather Burroughs] decided to plug him in. He scored points for us and had one of the best freshman debuts at CU and a time that will get him into regionals.”

Seventh place went to Matt Tebo. Tebo finished with a PR of 29:33.92; improving from his time of 30:41.22 that earned him third place in 2008. Andy Wacker rounded out CU's scoring in the 10k with eighth-place. His time was 29:39.37. Aldo Vega just missed scoring points for the Buffs with his ninth-place finish. He ran a mark of 29:41.19.

As soon as the gun went off, the Buffs took control of the race. Bosshard went to the front of the pack to start, but every Buff took his turn leading the field around the oval. Kosgei took the lead from CU after 1,400 meters but Tebo took it back a few laps later. The field was close as the first 15 runners stayed together for the first 6.5 kilometers.

“Historically conference meets are tactical with everyone reluctant to lead,” Wetmore said. “We didn't want to have 24 people together after nine kilometers so the fellas made sure that the race was honest. I'm happy with how they finished. They did their job and I'm happy for them.”

With less than one kilometer left in the race, Kosgei retook the lead from the Buffs but Neuman stayed on his heels. As the two headed into the final lap it was a sprint to the finish. Neuman's kick was strong but not quite enough as he ended up second. Neuman's last lap was 59.53 seconds, the second fastest 400 of the race behind Kosgei's 58.81. Neuman and Kosgei were the only two racers to run the final lap in less than 60 seconds.

The Buffs had a pair of women compete in the 10k. Camille Logan was 13th overall, running a time of 36:24.92, while Kristin Johansen was 14th with a time of 36:43.20.

Alex Von Hagen currently leads the CU men after the first day of the decathlon. He has picked up 3,513 points and sits in seventh place overall. Missouri's Nick Adcock owns the top score after the first five events (4.018).

Brianne Beemer is the top CU female in the heptathlon after the first four events. She has accumulated 2,827 points, just nine a head of teammate Alyssa Frank. Frank is ninth with 2,818 points. Nebraska's Chantae McMillan is the leader with 3,388 points. Beemer recorded a PR in the high jump after she reached a height of 5-04.25 (fifth place overall).
