Coburn Leads Buffs At Stanford

May 02, 2010 | Track and Field

BOULDER - The University of Colorado track team had a busy Saturday competing at a trio of meets: the Payton Jordan Cardinal Invitational (Palo Alto, Calif.), Texas Invite (Austin, Texas) and the Front Range Classic (Fort Collins, Colo.).

Emma Coburn led CU at the Payton Jordan Cardinal Invite where she placed fifth in the second section of the 1,500-meter run after crossing the finish with a time of 4 minutes, 21.37 seconds. She was the third best collegiate runner in the heat, as well as the event, finishing behind Lauren Bonds (Kansas, 4:17.27) and Penn State's Caitlin Lane (4:20.40). Her time ranks third in the Big 12 and is 15th in the west region. This was the first 1,500 of the year for Coburn and she shaved 6.32 seconds off her former personal record.

Laura Thweatt also recorded a personal best of 4:25.27 in the third section of the 1,500, improving on her former PR by almost 16 seconds (4:41.67) and in the process she placed second overall. Shalaya Kipp, also competing in the same heat as Thweatt, placed sixth with a PR of 4:29.69.

On the men's side, Richard Medina ran a personal best in the fourth section of the men's 1,500. He crossed the finish in 3:48.50, just .80 seconds behind UC Davis' Jonathan Sees (3:47.70).

Jordan Kyle turned in his best ever 5k (running in the second section) with a time of 13:54.61. He was ninth overall in a very close race. Ohio State's Jeff See won the heat in 13:44.49 and the top 10 finishers all were within 11 seconds of each other. Kenyon Neuman raced in the top section of the 5k and finished with a time of 13:52.19 for 18th place.

At the Texas Invite in Austin, Texas, Jeremy Dodson recorded a second place finish in the 200-meter dash after clocking the third best time in the Big 12 and the west region at 20.65 seconds. The time is also the 11th best in the nation so far this season. Baylor's Trey Harts won the 200 in 20.57 to edge out Dodson. The CU ace also ran in the 100 and placed fourth in the first heat, fifth place overall, with a time of 10.42. Aaron Armstrong won the race and Dodson's heat with a time of 10.23.

In Fort Collins, Colo., the Buffs had several athletes competing at the Front Range Classic. Freshman Jason DeWitt recorded a jump of 6 feet, 8 inches in the high jump for a personal record. He placed third in the event despite reaching the same height as the other top two finishers due to how many tries it took him (and the others) to reach the height of 6-8.

The men also had a good showing in the 1,500 as Matt Tebo and Andy Wacker took second and third, respectively. Tebo raced to a PR with a time of 3:55.50, while Wacker also had a PR of 3:55.53 just behind Tebo. In the women's 1,500, Kristin Johansen also took second place. She finished in 4:50.19. Colorado State's Aliese Willard won the race in 4:47.46.

Chynna McCall led the Buffs in the field, placing third in the shot put with a toss of 43-06.00. She also scored for CU in the hammer throw by taking seventh with a throw of 150-04. Both were personal bests.

Colorado has one more meet on the schedule before the Big 12 Outdoor Championship May 14-16 in Columbia, Mo. CSU will host the Fum McGraw Open on Saturday, May 8.
