Buffs Look Strong in Season-Opening Tournament
September 24, 2010 | Tennis
Boulder--The University of Colorado women's tennis team opened the fall season with a bang Friday afternoon at the South Campus Courts. Three Buffs went undefeated in singles play on the first day of the three-day CU Invitational, and two CU teams advanced to the semifinals in doubles play.
CU is hosting Denver and New Mexico State at the CU South Campus tennis courts.
Erin Sanders, Carla Manzi Tenorio, Winde Janssens and Michala Jensen all notched their first wins of the season during the round-robin singles tournament.
In the Gold Singles Draw, Sanders kicked her sophomore season off with a victory over Denver's Sophia Bergner, 6-4, 6-4, and, in her collegiate debut, Carla Manzi Tenorio dropped New Mexico State's Annemieke Witte, 6-2, 6-3.
Freshman Winde Janssens proved she was more than ready for collegiate completion, going 2-0 against competition in the Black Singles Draw on the day. In her first match as a Buff, she came from behind to defeat the Aggies' Manon Sylvain, 5-7, 6-1, 1-0 (6).
In the Silver Singles Draw, Junior Michala Jensen notched wins in her first two matches of the 2010 campaign. Jensen also had to play from behind in her first match after dropping the first set 3-6, but she outplayed New Mexico State's Natalia Salum in the final two sets en route to a 3-6, 6-2, 6-4 victory.
Colorado's doubles teams had a solid showing as well, placing two teams in the semifinals. Janssens and Manzi Tenorio defeated Denver's team of Isberg and Najera-Salasin the round of 16 before outlasting New Mexico State's Witte and Ngyuen in a closely contested quarterfinal match, 9-8 (6). Buff duo Michala Jensen and Madie Kern also faced a tough New Mexico State team in the quarters, staving off Manon Sylvain and Natalia Salum on their way to a grueling 8-6 victory.
Janssens and Manzi Tenorio will take on Ginet Pinero and Isabela Kulaif of New Mexico State in tomorrow's first semifinal match, while Kern and Jensen will face off against the Pioneers' Caroline Schnell and Natalie Dunn.
CU head coach Nicole Kenneally said, “The team has been playing hard for the last couple of weeks to prepare for this tournament. We still have some work to do, but we had some good results for the first day, and we're looking forward to getting some more tennis in tomorrow.”
The second day of the CU Invitational begins Saturday morning with singles play.
