Buffs Show Promise at CU Invitational

September 26, 2010 | Tennis

Boulder- Buff fans witnessed a nice preview of the upcoming season, as the women's tennis team had another strong showing in its final day of the CU Invitational. Colorado has been hosting the University of Denver and New Mexico State University this weekend at the CU South Campus tennis courts.

Similar to Saturday's play, the CU freshmen had another strong finish going 2-0 in their singles matches.

Kristina Schleich kicked things off with a victory over Denver's Natalie Dunn, using confidence from her first collegiate victory yesterday. Schleich won her first set 6-2, before battling for a 7-5 victory in the second set against a solid Dunn who won her singles and doubles matches Saturday.

The Buffs' freshman Carla Manzi Tenorio followed her teammate's performance with a victory of her own, beating Denver Pioneer Sophia Bergner 6-3, 7-5. Manzi Tenorio paired up with Winde Janssens for CU's only doubles victory yesterday. Their pairing was 3-0 in doubles play during the tournament but did not play today.

CU head coach Nicole Kenneally was pleased with the younger players' performance this weekend.

“I think it's important and exciting when you have freshmen come in and make an immediate impact. They all made a positive, dominant statement for themselves and their teammates in regards to how they want to succeed,” she said.

Schleich and CU sophomore Erin Sanders later paired up for doubles play, taking on an older New Mexico State Natalia Salum and Manon Sylvain. Though they battled hard, the Buffs came up short, falling 4-8 in the match.

Coach Kenneally was pleased overall with this weekend, but acknowledged the team is going to continue to work hard to improve.

“It's early in the year. We've only been practicing for two weeks so it really gave us a good idea of where we are now, but also what we need to work on. We will continue to work and be strong as a team. I think this event was a good first start, but there is obviously a lot of room for improvement.

“We're excited. We're going to continue to work hard and fight like Buffaloes,” she said.
