Women Set CU DMR Record At Big 12 Championship

February 25, 2011 | Track and Field

LINCOLN, Neb. - The University of Colorado women's distance medley relay team broke a 12-year-old school record on Friday night en route to placing fourth at the 2011 Big 12 Indoor Track & Field Championship.

The foursome of Katie Cumming, Brooke Regan, Liz Tremblay and Emma Coburn combined for a time of 11 minutes, 22.87 seconds at the Bob Devany Sports Center to best the previous record of 11:23.34, set in 1999.

Cumming ran the first leg (1,200-meters) and handed the baton to Regan to take around the track twice for the 400 meters leg. Tremblay picked it up from there and ran a solid 800 leg after running an 800 preliminary earlier in the day. Emma Coburn anchored the relay for the Buffs, completing the event with the mile. Coburn made good time and picked off a couple of competitors in the process to get the finish for the Buffs.

"We are happy to break the school record," coach Mark Wetmore said. "Honestly we thought we could go faster than that. Liz is tired after coming back from the 800, and really, when I saw the big lead that the front three teams had on Emma I was kind of flagging her down so she could feel fresher for tomorrow."

The Buffs originally placed third after the officials disqualified Oklahoma State's relay, but after a protest OSU was reinstated as the champion, bumping CU to fourth.

CU was successful in the men's and women's 5,000-meter runs. Joe Bosshard placed third with a time of 13:51.65 and came very close to a victory. He finished just over one second behind Oklahoma's Kevin Schwab who ran a mark of 13:50.31. OU's Kevin Williams was second (13:51.05). Bosshard started out in the middle of the pack at the beginning of the race, but made quick work of moving to the front as he was in fifth place after just 700 meters. Bosshard moved up to fourth shortly after and would hold on to that position until the final 800 meters when he charged into third.

Richard Medina also scored for the Buffs, placing sixth overall with a time of 14:03.32. Matt Tebo placed eighth overall (14:04.76). Andy Wacker just missed scoring for CU. He placed ninth (14:05.60) after OU's Bill Kogel passed both him and Tebo coming around the last curve.

Shalaya Kipp and Laura Thweatt earned points in the women's 5k. Kipp finished sixth overall after finishing in 16:33.09 and Thweatt placed eighth after running 16:34.63. This is Thweatt's third straight all-conference honor in the indoor 5k. Camille Logan just missed scoring for CU with a ninth-place finish (16:42.18).

Kipp and Thweatt got out to a good start in the race. Both stayed in the top 10 the entire time. Kipp and Thweatt were seventh and eighth, respectively, until Thweatt overtook Kipp with 1,200-meters remaining in the race. Kipp retook the lead on her teammate in the final lap and was able to beat out Texas' Mia Behm at the finish line. Logan also had a good race and steadily improved during the race but was unable to close the 20 meter gap between her and Thweatt to finish ninth (16:42.18).

"Overall I think the men and women's 5k's did what we hoped," Wetmore said. "They ran well and smart and let's hope they can do the same tomorrow in the 3k."

After the first day of the heptathlon, Alex Von Hagen is in ninth place with 2,845 points. He started the day by running 7.35 in the 60-meter dash and jumped 22 feet, 00.75 inches in the long jump. Von Hagen recorded a throw of 39-08.50 in the shot put and finished the day after cleaning a height of 6-03.25 in the high jump. Adam Salzmann is currently in 14th (2,744), Brock Emory is 17th (2,645) and Eddie Taylor is 18th (2,521).

"I think that Adam is a little ahead of where he normally is after the first day and the second day is typically his stronger day, so he is poised to move up and maybe get a couple of points for us," Wetmore explained.

Katie Dreher led the CU women in the pentathlon with a ninth-place finish and a personal record point total of 3,474. Dreher started the day by clocking a time of 9.37 in the 60-meter hurdles and recorded a high jump of 5-03.25. She earned a throw of 27-11.50 in the shot put and jumped 17-06.75 in the long jump. Dreher capped off her performance by running the second best time of the event in the 800 at 2:21.55. She finished first in the first heat of the race to clock the ninth-best time in CU combined events history.

Genny Mayden and Holly Odneal tied for 11th in the pentathlon with 3,364 points. The point total was a PR for Mayden.

"In the women's pentathlon two out of three PR'd," Wetmore said. "They didn't score, but two had their best performances ever. The other just missed. We ask them to do what they did to get here and two out of three did that. I think they should feel good about that. I do."

The Buffs had three athletes qualify for the finals of their respective events on Saturday. Staci Foster started things off for the Buffs in the mile run. She placed fifth in the first section and clocked a time of 4:50.59 to advance to the finals on time. This was Foster's first time running the mile at sea level, so her PR improved greatly from 5:14.79. Tremblay automatically qualified for the finals of the 800 after finishing third in the first heat. She crossed the finish in a personal record time of 2:09.23. Quinton Dodson also advanced for the Buffs. He will race in the 200 after finishing seventh in the 200 (21.62).

"Q was a pleasant surprise for us," Wetmore said. "We had hoped that Joe [Morris] would get through in the 60 or the 200, but he didn't and Q kind of picked it up for the sprints crew and is going to get us a couple of points tomorrow."

The second and final day of the championship is Saturday. The day will start at 11 a.m. (CST) with the men's heptathlon 60-meter hurdles.
