RMISA Alpine Qualifier (GS)

Buffs Compete In RMISA Qualifier
January 27, 2015 | Skiing
ELDORA-The University of Colorado ski team participated in an RMISA Giant Slalom Qualifier race here at Eldora Mountain Resort Tuesday, one day after claiming victory in the Spencer Nelson Memorial Invitational.Â
" It was a good maintenance day," CU Coach Richard Rokos said. " The kids weren't pushing super hard, but they worked on individual things, trying to improve on seeding position. They had some solid runs without anything super exciting happening."Â
In men's action, sophomore Roger Carry continued his impressive weekend by finishing fourth in a time of 1:53.75 in the men's race after taking home a second place finish on Monday. He has three top five finishes in four GS races this season.Â
" In Roger's case, a star has been born," Rokos said. "He put two races together back-to-back with very solid finishes. I've been waiting for this for a while and it came and it's great."
Junior Adam Zika finished ninth in a time of 1:54.49 with junior Henrik Gunnarsson taking 13th in 1:55.09. Junior Kasper Hietanen finished 18th in a time of 1:55.52 while junior Cameron Smith didn't finish his second run.Â
On the women's side, the Buffs had five skiers finish between eighth and 17th, led by Brooke Wales Granstrom, who finished eighth despite having to complete a rerun on her first run. She had started her run before the skier ahead of her fell and she then fell avoiding her.Â
She was the sixth skier down the hill, but with the rerun she became the 31st skier down and the course had substantially changed. Still, she had the 14th-fastest first run and then blazed her way to the fourth-fastest second run to move into the top 10.Â
The next four Buffs were 1.02 seconds apart in spots 10-17 as senior Shane McLean finished one spot back of Wales Granstrom in 10th in a time of 1:58.99, junior Jessica Honkonen was 12th in a time of 1:59.52, junior Thea Grosvold was 15th in 1:59.75 and freshman Dani Brownell-Patty was 17th in 2:00.01.Â
Freshman Katie Hostetler finished 26th in a tie of 2:04.91 and junior Clare Wales was 28th in a time of 2:06.23.Â
The Buffs will have less 24 hours off before heading to New Mexico for the 2015 Jade Enterprises New Mexico Invitational. Two alpine slalom races along with a team start classical and interval start freestyle race will take place Friday and Saturday at Red River Ski Resort and Enchanted Forest Cross Country Ski Area.Â
