October 14, 2015 | Tennis
LAS VEGAS – The University of Colorado tennis team had an impressive first day at the USTA/ITA Mountain Region Championships, with four players and one doubles teams advancing in main draw action.
The day began with doubles play, and the Buffs duo of sophomore Jeannez Daniel and junior Nuria Ormeno Ruiz defeated Montana State's Naomi Holopainen and Laura Middel, 8-4, to improve to 2-1 as a duo this fall. CU's duo of freshman Annabelle Andrinopoulos and sophomore Tina Bokhua are seeded as the No. 6 team and received a bye.
Both teams advance to the second round of 32, which will take place Thursday. Daniel and Ormeno Ruiz advance to face Wyoming's Dorottya Jonas and Elisa Koonik in the second round while Andrinopoulos and Bokhua will face BYU's duo of Brittanie Eraso and Savannah Ware.
Later in the day in singles action, four of five Buffs advanced into the second round while Bokhua, the No. 1 seed in the tournament, received a bye into the second round.
Andrinopoulos, the No. 12 seed, defeated Nevada's Monika Magusiak, 1-6, 6-4, 6-4 and Ormeno Ruiz, seeded No. 10, blanked Air Force's Veronica Dodds, 6-0, 6-0. Both advance to 4-0 on the season after both won their draws in the CU Invitational to open the season.
Daniel defeated New Mexico State's Gabby Joyce, 6-1, 6-1, to advance to the second round and improve to 3-1 on the season in singles action while sophomore Kyra Wojcik defeated Air Force's Lily Forlini, 6-4, 1-6, 6-4, and evened her singles record to 2-2 on the season.
Senior Alex Aiello fell to Boise State's Bobbi Oshiro, 6-2, 6-3, in her first action of the fall after returning from a knee injury.
"It was a good day," CU coach Nicole Kenneally said. "Nuria and Nez (Jeannez Daniel) took care of business. For Kyra and Annabelle to come back in three sets when they weren't quite playing their best was great. It's also good to have Alex back out competing, we just need to keep working on our strength. We have a big day tomorrow with one doubles and two singles matches so we are hoping for a long day."
On tap Thursday is also two rounds of singles action. In the second round, Bokhua will face Northern Arizona's Jordan Denesik, Ormeno Ruiz will face Wyoming's Miranda Talbert, Daniel will face New Mexico's Rachel Bhat, Andrinopoulos will face UNLV's Cristina Moroi and Wojcik will take on Nevada's Claudia Herrero.
On the season, the Buffs improve their singles record this fall to 17-7 after going 5-1 on the day and in doubles, the Buffs are now 8-6 with today's win.
Thursday's main draw action will include two rounds of singles action, the round of 64 and 32, and one more round of doubles action, the round of 32. Both draws will sit at 16 after Thursday's action. Back draw action gets underway Friday.
