Another Solid Day For Buffs At Mountain Regional

October 16, 2015 | Tennis

LAS VEGAS – The University of Colorado tennis team had another solid day at the USTA/ITA Mountain Regional, with Tina Bokhua and Nuria Ormeno Ruiz along with both doubles teams all advancing to the round of 16.

The day began with doubles action and both Buffs teams advanced to the round of 16. Freshman Annabelle Andrinopoulos teamed up with Bokhua and they defeated Utah State's Alice Patch and Lexi Turley, 8-4, in the duo's first-ever match.

Sophomore Jeannez Daniel and Ormeno Ruiz defeated Wyoming's Dorottya Jonas and Elisa Koonik, 8-6. It was that duo's third straight win dating back to the CU Invitational in late September.

Andrinopoulos and Bokhua will face Claudia Herrero and Adriana Gergelyova from Nevada and Daniel and Ormeno Ruiz will take on Northern Arizona's Blanka Szavay and Hanneke Lodewijks.

Singles action then got underway in the round of 64 and three Buffs advanced, including Bokhua, the top-seeded player. She beat Northern Arizona's Jordan Denesik, 6-1,6-2 and then defeated UNLV's Mercedes Lopez, 6-1, 6-1, to advance into the round of 16. She will next face New Mexico's Andrea Leblanc on Friday for a spot in the quarterfinals.

Ormeno Ruiz also advanced with two singles wins on Thursday, first taking down Wyoming's Miranda Talbert, 6-2, 6-4, and then Utah's Brianna Turley, 6-2, 6-4 to get to the round of 16.

“It was great to advance with the two doubles teams,” Kenneally said. “We may not have come out firing on all singles but it was great to see Nuria and Tina advance. We will have a chance to play more singles for everybody with the back draw starting, so that will be good.”

Daniel advanced out of the round of 64 with a 6-2, 6-1 victory over New Mexico's Rachel Bhat, but then retiring in the second set against BYU's Savannah Ware. She lost 6-2 in the first set and was up 1-0 before retiring.

Both Andrinopoulos and Kyra Wojcik's fell in the round of 64. Andrinopoulos fell to UNLV's Cristina Moroi, 7-6, 6-3, and Wojcik to Nevada's Claudia Herrero, 6-2, 6-4.

Friday's action will include two rounds of main draw doubles where winners will advance to the semifinals. There will also be one round of singles action, advancing to the quarterfinals.

Back draw action will also take place.
