Stroem Wins, Buffs Second At Seawolf Invitational

February 25, 2015 | Skiing

ANCHOARAGE, Alaska - Mads Stroem and Rune Oedegaard again went 1-2 in the men's classic race and the top-ranked University of Colorado ski team held onto second place Thursday here at the Seawolf Invitational, hosted by Alaska Anchorage.

The Buffs have 438.5 points and are currently 28 points behind No. 3 Utah (466.5) with No. 5 New Mexico (430) making a surge to within 8.5 points of the Buffs, meaning just 36.5 points separate the top three teams with just the giant slalom races remaining. No. 2 Denver is in fourth place with 378 points while host and No. 9 Alaska Anchorage is right on DU's heels with 369 points and No. 10 Montana State sits in sixth with 341.

Stroem, a sophomore, won the men's 7.5K classical race in a time of 20:22.2, 11.3 seconds ahead of Oedegaard. The win was Storem's second of his season and fourth of his career. The duo has now finished 1-2 in seven of eight races this season and in 10 of 16 career races together.

Oedegaard continues his assault on the CU record book and has now finished on the podium in 32 his 40 career races, including 19 victories and 10 runner-up performances.

Senior Emil Johansson was the Buffs third scorer on the day, finishing in 17th place in a time of 21:46.6 while sophomore Jackson Hill finished 22nd in 22:36.4, sophomore Max Scrimgeour 24th in 22:58.2 and freshman Ian Boucher in 27th in 23:47.3.

The women's Nordic team, still mostly recovering from illness, was led by freshman Petra Hyncicova, who finished ninth in 16:40.8, with freshman Jesse Knori coming in right behind her in 10th in 16:52.7. Sophomore Maja Solbakken, back after missing Monday's freestyle race due to illness, took 15th in 16:59.8. Sophomore Camilla Brautaset, also not 100 percent, finished 25th in 18:20.2.

With the Nordic portion of the Seawolf Invitational now complete, across the way at Aleyska Ski Resort, the alpine action got underway. Sophomore Thea Grosvold continued her stellar season, finishing fifth in the women's slalom race in a time of 1:43.56, keeping her string of top five slalom finishes alive as she has hit that mark or better in all five races this season.

Senior Brooke Wales Granstrom finished 11th in a time of 1:46.46 and her classmate, Shane McLean, was the Buffs third team scorer tied for 14th with a time of 1:48.68. Junior Clare Wise finished 21st in a time of 1:50.99, freshman Dani Brownell-Patty was 27th in 1:56.99 and sophomore Katie Hostetler took 30th in 2:12.75. Junior Jessica Honkonen did not finish her first run.

In men's alpine action, junior Adam Zika led the way with an eighth place finish in a time of 1:38.34, marking his fourth top 10 in slalom action in five races this season. Junior Kasper Hietanen finished 16th in a time of 1:40.12 and junior Cameron Smith had a very solid second run to move into the top 20, taking 19th in a time of 1:41.52.

Sophomore Roger Carry finished 23rd in a time of 1:44.32 while junior Henrik Gunnarsson had a top 10 snatched away as he was disqualified in the second run. He was in ninth place behind Zika before being DQ'd.

The Seawolf Invitational concludes Thursday with the giant slalom races before a quick turnaround into the post season for all the RMISA teams. The RMISA Championships, which double as the NCAA Western Regional, will commence on Friday and conclude on Saturday.

NOTES: A majority of the alpine teams also competed individually in another slalom FIS race Wednesday afternoon - Gunnarsson led the first run and finished on the podium in third place - Carry also brought home a 10th place finish in the men's race - three Buffs finished in the top 10 of the women's radce with Wales Granstrom finishing fifth, Honkonen finished sixth and McLean 10th - the Buffs got one step closer to a regular season RMISA Championship and have a 135 point advantage over Utah with just two races left in the regular season.
