Women's 4x400 Advances At Texas Relays
March 27, 2015 | Track and Field
AUSTIN, Texas – The University of Colorado women's 4x400-meter relay team recorded a fourth place finish in the preliminary round at Texas Relays on Friday to advance to the finals on Saturday.
Senior Lindsy Mattson, freshmen Ana Holland and Tashay Brown and junior Eileen Gehring teamed up for a time of 3:41.19, which was the top time in the fourth heat. Purdue won the preliminary round in 3:37.52.
“The highlight of today was definitely the women's 4x400,” assistant coach Drew Morano said. “They came out and competed pretty tough. It was just good to see them step up and run closer to their potential like I know they can. They will have better competition in the final and it will be exciting to see where we end up tomorrow.”
Holland also had a nice individual race just before the 4x400, finishing 20th overall in the 100-meter dash. She clocked in at 11.88, which was second in her heat. The time also put her seventh on CU's all-time performers list and is the fastest 100-meter time by a Buff since 2009.
“Ana did a good job with her 100; missing out on finals by about a tenth of a second,” Morano said. “This was her first 100 of the year and we haven't spent much time on it in practice. It's good to see she is picking it up pretty quick. She executed pretty well and she will do well for us this year.”
Holland had a busy day, as she also raced in the 4x100-relay along with sophomore Mia Holland, Brown and Gehring. The quartet finished 28th in 47.05.
CU's men were also in competition on Friday. The 4x100 relay of sophomores Jaylyn Mars, Austin Mitsch, Erik Gaytan and senior Shaw Gifford was 27th overall in 41.52. Gaytan and Gifford also raced with sophomore Garrett Losty and freshman Darrin Haynes in the 4x400, and that team was 28th in 3:15.19.
Sophomore Jaron Thomas was back in action in the hurdles, this time the 110-meter hurdles, and came away with a 26th place finish in 14.80. Gifford and Mitsch also raced in the individual 100. Gifford edged out Mitsch at the finish as both clocked in at 10.91 to place 48th and 49th, respectively.
“The 4x100s on both sides were a little rough time wise, but I though the execution was pretty good,” Morano said. “Across the board, anytime you are trying to get sprinters to perform at their best at 9:30 in the morning, you aren't always going to get PRs, but I thought they all competed pretty well. It was a quick turnaround for the individual 100s. They didn't even get to go back to the warm-up area before their races. The timing of it all maybe wasn't the best.
“All in all, this weekend hasn't quite been what we were hoping for time wise. We were hoping to come down and get some regional qualifying times, but they are getting some big meet experience and are seeing some different competition.”
