Tennis Goes 8-2 In Colorado Invitational Day Two

BOULDER- Day two of the Colorado Invitational started on Friday under blue skies and cool temperatures at the South Campus Tennis Complex, as the University of Colorado women's tennis team attempted to improve from their day one performance.
The Buffs would accomplish that goal of improving, playing two rounds of singles they went 8-2 on the day. A huge step up from the previous day.
“Yesterday at the end of the day we really talked about competiveness and our need to come out and fight harder,” CU head coach Nicole Kenneally said. “I think we did that all day today, and our record from the day shows that. I'm really happy with the energy and attitude we had today. It's exactly what we needed, and we got it all day.”
The first win of the day came from Jeannez Daniel, playing the gold draw, beating Georgetown's Risa Nakagawa 6-1, 6-4. The match was never in question as Daniel's handled herself well for the duration of the match on the way to getting her first win as a Buff.
The Buffs would get their second win of the day when Vitaliya Alkhovik, playing the silver draw, defeated Georgetown's Madeline Foley 6-2, 6-2. Alkhovik dropped two of the first three games in the first set, but after tying the score 2-2 she never trailed again for the rest of the match.
Recording her first collegiate win, freshmen Annabelle Andrinopoulos, playing the gold draw, gave the Buffs their third win of the morning defeating Georgetown's Victorie Saperstein 6-2, 6-4. The second set was a back and forth affair but Andrinopoulos was able to score the last two points to pull away with the victory.
The Buffs would continue their winning ways when Nuria Ormeño Ruiz defeated Colorado State's Emily Kolbow 7-6(3), 6-4. Ormeno fell behind 1-3 early in the first set, but she played tough the rest of the way forcing the tiebreaker and pulling away with the win. She handled her second set much better and easily finished off the Rams' Kolbow.
Finishing off the first round winning for the Buffs was Kyra Wojcik winning in three sets against Colorado State's Madison Porter 6-1, 2-6, 6-2. The match was the longest of the round for the Buffs but Wokcik would hold off Porter in the final set to take the match.
M oving into the second round the Buffs looked to keep with their winning ways.
The Buffs next win came from Alkhovik as she defeated Georgetown's Casey Marx 6-3, 6-3. The win was her second of the day and placed her in the silver draw's championship match.
Playing in her first collegiate three set match, Andrinopoulos would tire out New Mexico's Emily Olivier 3-6, 6-3, 6-3. After dropping the first set Andrionopoulos took control of the match and dominated the second and third set.
The first loss of the day for the Buffs came when Wojicik loss to New Mexico's Ruth Copas 3-6, 6-7(5). Wojicik didn't go down without fighting as she would force a tiebreaker in the second set. But fell short in that breaker to lose the match.
The Buffs final two matches of the day would go three sets.
Colorado's Daniel fell to New Mexico's Dominuque Dulski 6-3, 6-7(6), 2-6. Daniel started off strong taking the first set, but she dropped the second set in a tiebreaker and fell short in the third set.
But the best win of the day came in the form of Ormeno's 40th career win. Ormeno defeated New Mexico's Sharon Coone 4-6, 7-6(3), 6-2. After dropping the first set, Ormeno would show her fiery resolve as she fought back, winning the tiebreaker to force a third set then finishing the job winning the third set.
This win marked the seventh time Ormeno dropped the first set and came back to win in three sets.
The win moves Ormeno into the black draw final, along with Andrinopoulos who with her win moved onto the gold draw final.
“Tomorrow is day three of the tournament,” Kenneally said. “We played great today, but tomorrow is another day so it's important to see how we come out. I look forward to seeing how we come out tomorrow, and I expect us to come out with the same energy and fight we had today.”
