Buffs Rebound From Loss With 7-0 Win Over Boise
January 31, 2016 | Tennis
BOULDER - Colorado rebounded from its second loss of the season with a convincing 7-0 win over Boise State on Sunday at the Rocky Mountain Tennis Center in Boulder. Twice this season the Buffaloes have lost, but both times they have rebounded with a win.
"Boise State was definitely a challenging team," head coach Nicole Kenneally said. "I think anytime there were opportunities that they could've jumped back in there, we did a great job of stopping their run and not letting them get the momentum back. In quite a few situations, whether we realize it or not, there were a couple of moments there where it was very close and could've been a momentum change if we didn't take care of business. It was good to see us take care of business when we needed to."
CU, now 3-2 on the season after splitting with Boise State and Denver over the weekend, will head into a month-long road trip beginning next weekend at former Big 8/Big 12 rivals Kansas and Kansas State.
"Having a tough battle yesterday, we talked about as soon as you leave the facility, you've got to learn from it and catalog it and move on," Kenneally said. "I think everyone did their due diligence between matches and did their best to get ready for today.
Certainly CU made those adjustments from Saturday. Sunday was the second time this spring the Buffs have won the doubles point, doing so in dominating fashion. Nuria Ormeño Ruiz and Tina Bokhua breezed to a dominating 6-2 win at No. 1 doubles, and Annabelle Andrinopoulos and Jeannez Daniel also won 6-2 at the No. 2 spot. Both pairs held serve the entire match.
Andrinopoulos, playing No. 3 singles, responded from a tough straight-set loss on Saturday with a 6-4, 6-3 win over Arianna Paules Aldrey on Sunday. She held serve in all but two games and won deuce point three of four times.
"That's kind of what happens with freshmen," Kenneally said of the ups and downs for the freshman from match to match. "It's that inexperience. [Today] Belle was playing a sophomore, but she was able to find her ground early, make a few more balls."
The Buffs took a 3-0 lead after Bokhua battled to a 7-6 (2), 6-1 victory at No. 1 over Teal Vosburgh. Both players struggled to hold serve in the first set, breaking each other a combined eight of 13 games.
Ormeño Ruiz fought through a long three-set match at No. 2 to clinch the match. She edged Hanna Kantenwein 6-1, 5-7, 7-5. Similar to Bokhua's match at No. 1, Ormeño Ruiz and Kantenwein struggled to hold serve as the pair broke each other in nine of 12 games in the final set. Ormeño Ruiz was tough on deuce point, winning six of eight decisive points in the match. It was important to come back to win in three sets after she lost in three sets on Saturday to Denver.
"[There were] a lot of ups and downs today," Ormeño Ruiz said of her battle at No. 2 singles. "Losing my serve and then winning the return, it's usually the other way around. She had a really good serve and today wasn't my best day serving. In the match, I was just thinking, 'I'm not losing today' because yesterday was really close and that was not happening today."
Kyra Wojcik pushed the lead to 5-0, sweeping Nancy Menjivar 6-2, 6-1 at No. 5. Her serve was broken just once in the two sets.
Jeannez Daniel pulled out a 6-3, 4-6, 1-0 (6) win at No. 4 singles against Bobbi Oshiro. Despite dropping the second set, she broke Oshiro three times in the frame.
Alex Aiello closed out the perfect day for CU by winning 7-6 (0), 6-3 at No. 6 singles.
"I'm happy with less than 24 hours of recovery with how they did come back, how they did respond from the loss yesterday and rebounded today," Kenneally said. "We talked about it yesterday, being down 3-0, we could've walked away, but didn't and lost 4-3. Then today, [to] be pretty dominant in a few positions and definitely play our best doubles of the year, I'm pretty happy."
Ormeño Ruiz was also pleased to see her teammates fight for a 7-0 win, "When I am on the court, I am always going to battle no matter what. I just want my teammates to do the same thing, no matter whether they're losing or winning. I think that's the main key to win."
The Buffs will play at Kansas State on Friday and KU on Sunday.
