December 09, 2016 | Track and Field

GOLDEN, Colo. — A pair of Buffaloes set school records on Friday, wrapping up a busy first weekend for the University of Colorado's indoor track and field teams.

Junior Andrew Ghizzone finished third in the heptathlon at the Colorado School of Mines Alumni Classic and Multi with 5,405 points, while at the Air Force Holiday Open, sophomore Duane McClurkin Jr. ran the 300-meters in 33.80 seconds which is now the fastest time in CU history.

Ghizzone and McClurkin Jr. highlighted a very successful day for CU with athletes competing at the CSM Alumni Classic & Multi in Golden, Colo., the AFA Holiday Open at the U.S. Air Force Academy, as well as the Wyoming Power Meet in Laramie, Wyo.

Mines Heptathlon: Ghizzone's 5,405 points broke CU's previous record of 5,392, which was set by Drew Hildner on Feb. 26, 2000.

Ghizzone was in fifth place entering the second day of competition and turned in a solid day across the three events he participated in to work his way up to third place.

He finished eighth (8.85) in the 60-meter hurdles, but he turned around and finished first in the pole vault after clearing a mark of 15-1.  Ghizzone came in first during the final event as well, finishing the 1,000-meters in 2:45.62 to wrap up a very successful meet.

Sophomore Joe Martinez also turned in a good performance, finishing tenth overall (4,598) strengthened by a second-place finish and PR time of 2:46.62 in the 1,000.  Freshman Davis Butte finished 13th (4,420), sophomore Nate Gravelding came in 17th (4,287) and freshman Aaron Carmichael finished 18th (4,218) to wrap up CU's competitors in the heptathlon.

AFA Men's Events: McClurkin Jr.'s time of 33.80 in the 300-meters breaks the former CU record of 35.14 by almost two seconds and gave CU its only first place finish of the day.  McClurkin Jr. also set a PR in the 60, finishing third in 6.93 seconds.

In the high jump, sophomore Dionne Taylor Jr., finished tied for second, turning in a mark of 6-4.75.

CSM Women's Events:  In the high jump, junior Rajon O'Quinn finished in second place, turning in a mark of 5-7, while in the triple jump, sophomore Maja Wichhart-Donzo, fresh off her second-place finish in the previous day's pentathlon, came in fourth place (38-8.25).  Also in the triple jump, freshman Sarah Hopkins, finished inside the top ten at ninth, recording a mark of 36-6.75.

O'Quinn was also busy on the track, where she finished the 60-meter dash in 7.58 seconds for third overall. The time tied O'Quinn with former Buff Eileen Gehring as the fourth best performer in CU history and also gave O'Quinn two top-three finishes on the day.

UW Men's Events: Senior Jaron Thomas finished second in the 55-meters hurdles, finishing the race in 7.34 seconds.  The time tied Thomas with Reggie DePass as the fourth best performance in CU's history.

In the weight throw, the Buffs turned in four top-ten finishes, led by junior Grayson Webber's throw of 47-7.25.  Junior Matthew Denton finished eighth (47-6.25), sophomore Austin Swanson threw a PR of 41-1.75 to finish ninth and freshmen Caleb Penner came in tenth with a distance of 34-0.25.

UW Women's Events: Freshman Eriana Henderson, competing in her first collegiate race, finished third in the 55-meter hurdles with a time of 8.33 seconds.

The weight throw produced a sixth-place finish for sophomore Elisa Grandemange (53-9.00) and fellow sophomore Delaney Hall threw a PR mark of 46-11.50 to finish ninth, giving the Buffs a pair of top-ten finishes.

Quotable (CU Assistant Coach Lindsey Malone):
Andrew's school record in heptathlon this early in the season is mind-blowing with how much he's put together this fall.  We were considering redshirting him this fall but he's been turning it on and we just had to go for it, and clearly today he proved that.  And there's still a lot to go this season and I think that he can improve that mark a couple of more times.

Duane's been training like a pro and it definitely shows.

Rajon had an amazing day, coming in fourth best time in school history.  I think there's room to grow there too.  She had a great high jump as well and missed her PR there by just a smidge and I'm really excited to see how the rest of her season goes so far.

I'm so proud of our Buffs for all of the hard work they've put in this fall.  I've pushed them and they've responded.  They did it as a team and as individuals.  I've been beyond impressed, I've told them that they've been doing amazing things and today they got to see what all of their hard work was for.
