Ormeño Ruiz, Buffs Earn Regional Awards

May 23, 2017 | Tennis

BOULDER - University of Colorado tennis player Nuria Ormeño Ruiz earned the Intercollegiate Tennis Association Senior Player of the Year Award for the Mountain Region and the team won the Community Service Award here Tuesday. Ormeño Ruiz is the second Buff to win the award in school history, joining Karen McIntosh (1996) while this is Colorado's first team regional award.

"Earning the senior of the year caps off a great career for Nuria at CU," head coach Nicole Kenneally said. "We all know what she meant to the program and for the regional committee coaches to also vote her in for this award against several other top players in the region is definitely a sign of respect by everyone that has competed with her and against her."

A Barcelona, Spain native, Ormeño Ruiz led CU in her final season. Ormeño Ruiz recorded a 19-14 singles record including 10-10 in the No. 1 singles spot.  She also had a team high 19 wins. Ormeño Ruiz had many senior year highlights including powering past No. 51 ranked Caroline Doyle of Stanford in April. She defeated Doyle 6-0, 6-4.

For her career, she posted an 80-50 career singles record, including 18-20 at the No. 1 singles position. She also went 58-52 in doubles play. She defeated a total of eight nationally ranked opponents during her career including six in singles play.

The team also earned the Community Service Award after an impressive year out in the community. "Receiving this award is one of pride for our team," Kenneally said. "It is an honor to be recognized by the ITA for our team efforts to help support our community. The Tennis Marathon for Breast Cancer is an event near and dear to my heart.   To see our tennis community come out and support this event alongside the team and to provide help and assistance for families in need is inspiring as it touches so many. We also have so many great opportunities within the athletic department to give back to the community with Read with the Buffs, Buff Hugs and Food Drive and we take every opportunity we can to support the community that supports so much."
