Barton's Brace Leads Buffs To Record-Breaking 6-1 Win

September 16, 2017 | Soccer

CU scores two goals in 14 seconds and sets record for assists in a match

DENVER - Colorado exploded for five second-half goals and sophomore Tatum Barton netted her second brace of the season to lead the Buffs to a 6-1 win at the University of Denver on Saturday night.

The Buffs improved to 6-1-2, while DU dropped to 3-4-1.

HOW IT HAPPENED: Barton scored just 1:29 into the match, firing with her left foot to the left side of the net from the center of the box after taking a pass from Megan Massey.

Barton scored her second of the match just a minute and 37 seconds into the second half, finishing from the right side of the box. Her goal was assisted by Joss Orejel and Cassie Phillips after a cross into the box.

Taylor Kornieck scored 14 seconds later after forcing a turnover near midfield and striking from 30 yards out.

The Pioneers got one back in the 52nd minute when Hannah Adler tapped in a rebound after Scout Watson saved the initial shot.

Orejel scored her second career goal in the 60th minute when her cross from the left side found the far side of the net.

Less than two minutes later, Katie Joella netted her first career score, heading in a cross from Orejel off a touch by Massey.

Camilla Shymka scored her first goal of the season in the 84th minute, finishing towards the far post from the right corner of the goal box after passes from Jordan Goodwin and Becca Rasmussen set up the shot.

KEY STATISTICS: CU outshot DU 15-7 in the match, including 9-4 in the second half. Scout Watson made two saves in the second half in relief of Jalen Tompkins, who did not face a shot on goal in the first half.

NOTES: Barton and Kornieck's goals just 14 seconds apart were the 15th-fastest consecutive goals in NCAA history and the fastest in CU history ... Barton's goal at 1:29 was the third-earliest goal to start a match in school history ... CU's six goals scored are tied for the third-most in school history (8 vs. St. Mary's in 2009; 7 vs. Texas Tech in 2004; 6 vs. Minnesota in 2003 and UC Riverside in 2017) ... CU's eight assists broke the school record (previous mark was six, five times)

UP NEXT: CU will host No. 1 UCLA at 3:30 p.m. on Friday at Prentup Field.

POSTGAME QUOTES:
Danny Sanchez, head coach
On  the game
"I'm pleased with the team with how we played, especially in the second half. It's a good Denver team. If you look at the results the last three or four years, it's always one-goal games. It was a one-goal game at halftime, but really the key was the two early goals in the second half. That really put the stamp on the game."

On Taylor Kornieck's goal 14 seconds after Tatum Barton's second score
"I think that sometimes when you give up a goal or something doesn't go your way, you tend to relax. And I think as a team that scores the goal, you've got to bring the energy. It was fortunate for us and a great individual effort from Taylor. I think that was really the key moment in the game because 2-0, it was still a game. Obviously if they score a goal, then they're chasing a goal late. To get that third goal really took the pressure off us a little bit."

On the tempo in the second half compared to the first half
"I think sometimes when you get a goal early in the game, you tend to relax and I think that happened a little bit. I think that DU had the run of play for a middle stretch of the first half. I thought towards the end, we started [playing better], but we only had one shot on goal in the first half. So we challenged the group to come out with same energy, but once we had some success, to stay on top of it. Playing under the lights, in front of a good crowd, you're going to bring energy. And fortunately for us, getting the early goals in both halves were very important."

Tatum Barton, sophomore
On the importance of getting the early goal in the first half
"I think it was really important because this is a big game and it helped us settle down and our confidence went up."
