Buffs Take Down UNM, 5-2, In Sweep Of New Mexico Schools

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – The University of Colorado women's tennis team finished the sweep of the state of New Mexico here Sunday, defeating the New Mexico Lobos, 5-2, at the McKinnon Family Tennis Center. After taking down both New Mexico State and New Mexico this weekend, CU's record is now 7-2 on the season, while the loss moves UNM to 2-4.
"I'm proud of how we competed this weekend," said head coach Nicole Kenneally. "In each match we had nine positions come out and compete and that is what puts you in a position to win college tennis matches."
The Buffs took the doubles point early on with a pair of hard-fought wins by the duos of junior Brigitte Beck and sophomore Chloe Hule as well as juniors Jeannez Daniel and Ilana Oleynik. On court No. 3, Daniel and Oleynik took down the Lobos' Natasha Munday and Lauren Rich, 6-2. In the No. 1 doubles match, Beck and Hule clinched the doubles point, 7-6, over UNM's Ruth Copas and Danielle Quevedo.
"Today, doubles were a big momentum push into singles," said Kenneally. "We were up at No. 2 doubles and didn't close, but came back from a big deficit at No. 1 doubles and that took us into singles play."
The doubles pairing of Beck and Hule remains undefeated this season with a record of 7-0.
In singles play, CU picked up wins from freshman Linda Huang, senior Kyra Wojcik, Hule and Oleynik.
In the No. 1 singles match, the No. 109-ranked Huang defeated Copas, 6-2, 7-5; Hule took down Quevedo, 6-2, 6-2 on court No. 2; and on court No. 6, Oleynik clinched the match, 6-4, 6-2, over Rich.
Wojcik beat UNM's Hsiang-Wen Huang, 7-5, 7-6, after the match had been clinched.
Huang is now 7-2 in singles play this season, 6-2 in the No. 1 spot.
"Overall, we played a lot of the clutch points well today," said Kenneally. "We look forward to getting outside next weekend and welcoming our Pac-12 opponents, Arizona and Arizona State."
On Friday, March 9, the Buffs take on the Arizona Wildcats at 1:30 p.m. MT and on Sunday, March 11, CU faces the Arizona State Sun Devils. The time for the ASU match has yet to be determined due to possible weather.
