Colorado Holds On For 4-3 Win Over Arizona In Pac-12 Opener

BOULDER – The University of Colorado women's tennis team jumped out to an early lead after taking the doubles point and held on to win 4-3 over the visiting Arizona Wildcats. It was the first time since the 2008-09 season that the Buffaloes won its conference opener when CU beat Oklahoma, 4-3, in its first Big 12 match of the season. The win improved CU's record to 8-2 overall and 1-0 in the Pac-12 and the loss dropped UA to 8-6 overall and 0-1 in the Pac-12.
"It's exciting," said head coach Nicole Kenneally. "Today, we had two teams out there just really battling and it wasn't under the best circumstances."
Wind gusts of 32 miles per hour affected play throughout the match as players tried to adjust to the tennis ball.
"It got a lot windier than I thought it was forecasted to be and it was consistent, so it makes for ugly play," said Kenneally. "But, today we won ugly. To have the ability to play, compete and win in ugly weather is a great thing."
In doubles play, Colorado and Arizona split wins on court No. 2 and court No. 3. The pairing of juniors Jeannez Daniel and Ilana Oleynik taking down the Wildcats' Gitte Heynemans and Sophia Thomas, 6-2, in the No. 2 doubles match. Junior Brigitte Beck and sophomore Chloe Hule clinched it with a win over Arizona's Mary Lewis and Marie Van Aelst, 6-4, on court No. 1.
The doubles pairing of Beck and Hule remain undefeated this season at 8-0.
In singles play, four of the six matches went three sets with senior Kyra Wojcik and freshman Linda Huang picking up wins. Wojcik took a 6-4, 7-5 win over UA's Talya Zandberg on court No. 5 and the No. 1 singles match went wire to wire as the 113th-ranked Huang beat Lewis, 6-4, 4-6, 6-4.
Hule and her teammates celebrated the victory on court No. 2 after she clinched the match with a win over the Wildcats' Camila Wesbrooks, 6-3, 5-7, 6-3.
"I really liked, overall, how we came out and competed," said Kenneally. "We kept trying to figure out a way. You always have to dig deep on days like this and today we dug deep."
The Buffs will face the Arizona State Sun Devils on Sunday, March 11. The location and time of the match have yet to be determined due to possible weather, but updates can be found on the CU Women's social media accounts that morning.
