Freshman Dengerud Wins Team MVP Honor

BOULDER—Freshman Erik Dengerud won the Dick Schoenberger Memorial Award given to the team's MVP, headlining the team awards that coach Richard Rokos handed out at the University of Colorado ski team's annual banquet on Tuesday evening.  A total of eight team awards were handed out in addition to honoring the team's letterwinners and other awards previously announced.

A total of 17 members of the team lettered in 2019 with two skiers lettering for the fourth time and nine Buffs earning their first letter.  Seniors Nora Christensen, Max Luukko both lettered for the fourth time. Senior Christina Rolandsen and junior Anne Siri Lervik were the lone third-year letterwinners, while senior Alvar Alev and sophomores Hedda Baangman, Sondre Bollum and Joey Young earned their second letter.  First year letterwinners include Andrea Arnold, Max Bervy, Dengerud, Stef Fleckenstein, Filip Forejtek, Wyatt Gebhardt, Ezra Smith, Teddy Takki and Mikaela Tommy.

Dengerud won the Dick Schoenberger Award on the strength of winning the Individual NCAA Championship and Individual RMISA Championship in the freestyle discipline.  He earned first-team All-RMISA and two All-America honors at the NCAA Championships.  On the season, he finished in the top 10 in 10 of 12 races with three podium performances and two race wins, the two aforementioned individual championships.

Young earned the the Buddy Werner Memorial Scholarship Award, which dates back to 1973 and is dedicated to one man who's synonymous with competitive skiing in America.  Werner was America's first international skiing star who skied for CU from 1960-63 and won the individual NCAA Championship in the slalom in 1961 and was the individual downhill champion in 1963.  Young was CU's most consistent men's alpine skier this season, finishing all 14 races and 13 times placing in the top 15.  He had eight top 10 performances with one race win, taking the slalom race at the Montana State Invitational.

Freshman Kaitlyn Harsch was named the recipient of the Laura Sharpe Flood Award, given every year since 1991 to the skier who best exemplifies the spirit, enthusiasm and dedication both on the mountain and in the classroom.  Harsch steadily improved throughout the season and had her best collegiate finishes at the end of the season, taking 14th in the slalom race at the UAA Invitational and 14th in the GS race as part of the RMISA Championships, also in Alaska.

Tommy earned the team's Outstanding Alpine Woman Award, given every season since 1980.  Tommy won her first three career GS races, becoming the first women's alpine skier to win her first three GS races in CU history.  She completed eight of 10 races this season with all eight finishes coming in the top 10 and six of the eight in the top 5 including four podium appearances and those three race wins. She earned two first-team All-America honors at the NCAA Championships by finishing fourth in the GS and third in the slalom.

Baangman won the team's Outstanding Nordic Woman Award, given every season since 1980.  Baangman was the RMISA Women's Nordic MVP accumulating more points than any skier in the region this season. She finished 11 of 12 races with nine top 10 performances and hit the podium seven times with one race win, taking the 15K classic race at the Montana State Invitational.

Sophomore Tyler Terranova earned the team's Lucie Hanusova Memorial Award, given to the skier who overcomes adversity and challenges with smiles and enthusiasm.  Hanusova was a member of the 1998 CU ski team before passing away in a snowmobile accident on January 11 after just her second collegiate race.

Senior Bobby Moyer earned the team's Spencer Nelson Award, given by Spencer's parents Peter Nelson and Peggy Smith annually to the skier who overcome adversity and demonstrated a strong work ethic.  Nelson lost his life prior to his sophomore season at CU in August 2011, in a hiking accident.  The award has been given out since 2013.

Three Buffs, Christensen, Luukko and Rolandsen, were recipients of the Outstanding Career Achievement Award.  All three were four-time letterwinners and earned multiple All-America awards in their careers.  Christensen finished 51 of 56 alpine races with 23 top 10 and 16 top five performances including nine podiums and two race victories.  She was an All-American three times in her career.   Luukko finished 55 of 56 career races with 34 top 10 and 20 top five finishes including nine podiums and one race victory.  He earned four All-America awards in his career.  Rolandsen earned five All-America awards in her career as she finished all 44 career races she participated in collegiately and 34 times was in the top 10 with 15 top 5 finishes including eight podium appearances.
