CU Women Put On Strong Showing In Second Day

January 11, 2020 | Track and Field

BOULDER – The Colorado track and field program concluded the final day of the Potts Invitational with a pair of wins on the women's side Saturday in the Indoor Practice Facility.

The women's hurdle squad stole the day with all five women advancing to the hurdle finals where Dani Johnson took the win at 8.44 seconds. Right behind her was Valerie Welch who was just two-hundredths of a second off her best last season. Freshman Tamia Badal became the ninth-best performer in school history after she ran 8.73 to finish fourth while freshman pentathlete Avery McMullen ran 8.82 to finish fifth. Eriana Henderson overran the first two hurdles, throwing off her momentum as she finished in eighth after qualifying with the second-fastest mark of 8.67 seconds in prelims.

Badal and Welch weren't done there as they joined up with Jaida Drame and Samantha Crosmer in the women's 4x400-meter relay, cruising to a winning time of 3:49.98. Their mark is good for 10th on the school's top-10 list.

The women also had numerous top-five finishes today. Henderson recovered from the hurdles and ran 24.98 in the 200-meter dash to finish second overall. Johnson was fourth in that race at 25.36. Karina Mann finished second in the women's 800 at 2:12.57 while Elizabeth Constien opened her indoor career with a third-place finish in the 3,000 at 10:13.38. Three freshmen throwers had good showings in the shot put led by Lauren Whyrick's third-place finish.

On the men's side, Kendal Smith and Eduardo Herrera picked up a pair of runner-up finishes in their respected events. Smith led a trio of 400-meter runners from Colorado as he finished second in 48.42. Freshman Garrett Nelson opened his career with a fourth-place 48.77, running virtually alone as he built up a huge gap from the start. Nathan Hoy rounded out the top-five at 49.14.

Herrera ran 8:29.93 for his first 3,000 at altitude in a CU jersey, finishing second overall. Paxton Smith dropped 12 seconds off his personal best to finish fourth in 8:35.68.

Colorado returns to action next week at the Air Force Invitational Thursday through Saturday. After that everyone takes the following weekend off in preparation for the Colorado Invitational January 30th to February 1st.
