Buffs Fall to No. 55 California 4-3

BOULDER-The Colorado Buffaloes Tennis Team nearly pulled off an impressive comeback against No. 55 California, but in the end the Buffs fell just short, falling 4-3 Sunday here at the Rocky Mountain Tennis Center.  

The Buffs fall to 7-5 overall and 0-2 in Pac-12 play with the loss.  

How it happened
  • California started the morning with a 6-0 victory at No. 3 doubles with Jessica Alsola and Katja Wiersholm defeating Ellen Puzak and Betina Tokac.
  • The Golden Bears clinched the doubles point with a 6-4 victory from 16th-ranked Haley Giavara and Erin Richardson at No. 1 doubles over Antonia Balzert and Aya El Sayed.
  • No. 2 doubles was unfinished between Mila Stanojevic and Elys Ventura of Colorado and Hannah Viller Moeller and Berta Passola Folch of California with the Buffs up 6-5 at the time.
  • Singles started with a win for California to take a 2-0 lead from the No. 36 player in the country Jessica Alsola defeating Elys Ventura 6-1, 6-3 at No. 2 singles.
  • The Buffs got on the board at No. 1 singles to bring it back to a 2-1 Cal advantage behind a 6-4, 3-6, 6-3 three set victory from Antonia Balzert over Haley Giavara.
  • The No. 122 player in the country Katja Wiersholm extended the lead for Cal against Mila Stanojevic in a exciting 4-6, 6-3, 7-5 victory.
  • Colorado closed the gap to 3-2 with a dominating 6-2,6-3 win at No. 4 singles from Aya El Sayed over Hannah Viller Moeller.
  • California clinched the match at No. 5 singles with a 6-4, 6-0 win from Berta Passola Folch over Betina Tokac to go up 4-2.
  • To close the match Carri Hayes won at No. 6 singles over Cami Brown 4-6, 6-3, 1-0 (10-1) in a third set 10-point tiebreaker match to make it 4-3 in favor or the Bears.
Notes
  • Aya El Sayed has a six-match win streak at No. 4 singles after defeating the Hannah Viller Moeller.
  • California is the two-time defending Pac-12 Champion.
