CROSS COUNTRY GOES SECOND AND FOURTH AT TIGER INVITE

HAYS, Kan. ? In his first collegiate cross country race, junior transfer Erik Heinonen ran to a runner-up finish while senior Kendall Grgas-Wheeler finished third to pace the University of Colorado men's and women's cross country teams to second and fourth-place finishes, respectively, here at Saturday morning's Tiger Invitational.
Barton County Community College's Jake Raines won the men's 8k race in 25 minutes, 30 seconds while Air Force's Lindsay Grose won the women's 5k in 18:41 to pace the Falcons to the women's team title with 43 points. The Air Force men completed the team sweep taking the men's race with all five scorers among the top 10 finishers fro 31 points.
A University of Oregon transfer, Heinonen covered the Hays, Kan. 8k loop in 25:59, 29 ticks off the winning pace. Unlike a 12th place finish in this race a year ago, junior Will Campbell ran to a fifth place finish, and like last year, scored as the Buffs' No. 2 runner. Matt McCue ran to a career-best finish in this race when he finished ninth in a course pr 26:42. Daniel Kenney (27:29) finished 19th overall and as CU's fourth scorer while Anthony Chiulli completed CU's scoring with a 20th place effort in 27:31. In his second race as a Buff, Micah Moseley (27:56) finished 26th.
Grgas-Wheeler's third-place finish on the women's 5k course is a career-best for the senior who ran this race for the first time in her career in 18:45, as was Erin Marston's fifth place effort in a course pr 19:19 after finishing 10th in this race in '03 in 20:16. Kelly Shuma scored as the Buffs' third runner when she finished 25th in 20:32 while Allie Bruce came in at 36th in 21:05. Sophomore Marcy Cameron rounded the CU scoring in 22:35 to finish 56th.
A week from today the Colorado varsity will head to Terre Haute, Ind., site of this year's NCAA Championships, for the largest race of the season, the Pre-National Invitational where an expected 1,500 athletes are expected to compete in six races.
