Buffs Finish Eighth at Heather Farr

October 04, 2005 | Women's Golf

BROOMFIELD, Colo. - On a cold and cloudy day here Tuesday at the Omni Interlocken Resort, the University of Colorado women's golf team could not rally to get their first win of the season, instead slipping from fourth to eighth in the eighth annual Heather Farr/CU Memorial Invitational.

“We're extremely disappointed with today's finish,” said head coach Anne Kelly.  “We need to work hard on our putting and learning how to finish strong when we are in contention.  Some good things happened this week and we are going to build on those.”

Denver claimed the tournament championship with a three-round total of 299-296-289 ? 884, good for a 20-over par total.  Fresno State was second (304-293-300 ? 897) and San Jose State, the defending champion, finished third (294-304-305 ? 903).

Emily Hoeper of DU won her second straight tournament after a scorching 68 on the day, one of just three sub-par rounds today and the only player to break 70 in the tournament, finishing at one-under par 215 for the meet.  Renee Skidmore played the most consistent golf of the tournament, shooting par all three rounds for a 214 total and second place.

Lindsay Caljouw and Hannah Hoch had the best rounds of the day for Colorado, both shooting a five-over par 77 today.

“Today was disappointing,” said Hoch, CU's top returning player from a year ago.  “We need to work on finishing a round, finishing a tournament.  Everyone is brainstorming about what it is we need to do, but really we just need to do it.”

Senior Maria Persson-Gulda, who was the tournament co-leader after two rounds, struggled all day to a seven-over 79.  Her three round total of 223 (+7) landed her in the top 10 for the first time this season as she took seventh.  Hoch finished 14th.

It was also a rough day for CU's number four and five golfers, as Jessie Malcolm finished on an 80 and Lindsay Koth wrapped up her final round at 82.

Five CU golfers played as individuals today, with Lindsay Senger carding a 79, wrapping up at 238.

Colorado will hit the road in two weeks, traveling to Las Cruces, N.M. for the New Mexico State Invitational.
