Women Netters Open Fall Season

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M.?Senior Jessica Vanderdys and freshman Monica Milewski each advanced to the semifinal round of the main draw singles Friday afternoon at the four-team University of New Mexico Invitational. The UNM Invite is the first fall tournament for the Buffaloes this season and runs through Sunday.
In addition to the host Lobos, the University of Alabama and Northern Arizona complete the field with CU.
Overall on the day, the Buffaloes achieved a 7-3 record in the main draw singles that also includes the consolation bracket.
Vanderdys had the tougher road to the semis escaping in the first round in three sets rallying to defeat Jennifer Ryba of New Mexico, 6-7, 6-4, 7-5. Vanderdys cruised in her next match defeating Natalie McElveen, 6-3, 6-1.
Milewski, one of three newcomers on this year's 2005-06 CU team won her first collegiate match Friday morning with an easy 6-1, 6-1 victory over Susan McClelland of Northern Arizona. Milewski, from Park Ridge, Ill., kept her momentum going in the afternoon session upsetting the nation's No. 30 ranked player, Maja Kovacek of New Mexico 6-3, 6-4.
Milewski and Vanderdys will face one another in Saturday's semifinal round.
"We're happy with today's play and we'll come out and fight just as hard on Saturday," said CU head coach Nicole Kenneally. "Monica's win over a nationally ranked player (Kovacek) is an impressive start to her collegaite career."
Also on the day, Veera Nurmi and Martina Sedivec each dropped their first round match only to advance in the consolation semifinal rounds with victories; and freshman Franziska Jendrian also won her collegiate debut rallying from a set down in defeating New Mexico's Nora Quintal, 4-6, 7-6, 6-0. Jendrian would subsequently fall in her next match.
In Flight B, CU went 3-3 with two players falling in their first match and advancing in consolation play. Senior Jenny Hanson, however, opened her flight win a victory over Allison Davis of New Mexico, 6-0, 7-5, only to fall in the quarterfinals.
In the main draw doubles, the duo of freshman Jendrian/Vanderdys advanced to Saturday's semifinal round defeating Abou-Zekry/Scott of New Mexico in an exciting 9-8 decision; and in the Flight B doubles bracket, sophomores Veera Nurmi and Allison Quinn also advanced to the semis defeating Davis and Bonner of New Mexico, 8-1.
