No. 8 Aggies Beat No. 17 Buffs 3-0 in Soccer Action
October 06, 2006 | Soccer
BOULDER - The No. 17 University of Colorado women's soccer team stumbled out of the gate and couldn't regain their stride, falling by a score of 3-0 to the No. 8 Texas A&M Aggies here Friday.
Texas A&M got a pair of goals from Suzzette Devloo and another from Kat Krambeer to top the Buffs in front of 1,315 fans at Prentup Field.
"I think the difference in the game was they finished their chances and we didn't," said senior Laura Munnelly. "It was a battle and it always is with them. They finished and we didn't. That was the difference."
The Aggies got on the board early when A&M's Micah Stephens hit a service that CU starting keeper Kirstin Radlinski couldn't hang on to. The ball fell to the ground and Devloo was there to tuck it away with one touch at the 7:48 mark.
A&M went up 2-0 in the game's 20th minute when Ashlee Pistorius, Amy Berend and Amber Gnatzig combined on a quick combination off of an A&M corner kick to set-up Kat Krambeer inside the penalty area for her second goal this year. She took the pass from Berend and chipped it past Radlinski.
The halftime stats were relatively even with five TAMU shots to four for Colorado, with the Aggies owning a 3-2 edge on corner kicks and four saves for the Aggies' Kristin Arnold to Radlinski's one.
Colorado came into the second half with some formation adjustments hoping to get a quick goal back and get back into the game, but the tables were quickly turned.
The Aggies got a corner kick right away, which was played well over the goal area and floated to the far side of the box. Paige Carmichael took a touch and threaded the ball back across the penalty area on the ground, where it was knocked around. Finally Nicole Ketchum found Devloo, who back-heeled it into the goal, just out of the reach of Kara Linder, who started the second half in net for Colorado. That made it 3-0 at the 46:00 mark of the game.
The Buffaloes outshot the Aggies in the second half 4-3, and forced Arnold into one save. CU also had the edge on corner kicks 2-1. There were a few firsts for Colorado in the game; freshman Jess Quador got the first start of her career, and it also marked the first career minutes for freshmen Shea Kelly, Kelly DuChene and Kyrna Wheeler. Sophomore Kris Kauftheil also got her first minutes of the season.
This match marks just the second time this season that Colorado has been shut out. The other time was the season opener where the Buffs tied then-No. 22 Vanderbilt 0-0 in Nashville.
"In the huddle we talked about it; we have another big game coming up on Sunday," said Munnelly. "That's the nature of the Big 12 is you play Friday and then you play Sunday. So we can't dwell on this result. I don't think it was they played better and we didn't, they finished their chances."
Colorado will now have to regroup quickly as the No. 22 Texas Longhorns, who were 1-0 winners over Kansas in Lawrence on Friday, come to Boulder on Sunday. CU and UT will kickoff at 1 p.m. at Prentup Field. Admission and parking are free.
