Women's Golf Finishes 10th at Salbesgeon Suites Invitational

September 19, 2006 | Women's Golf

CORVALLIS, Ore.?The University of Colorado women's golf team was not able to rally here Tuesday afternoon and finished in 10th place at the Salbasgeon Suites Invitational hosted by Oregon State University.

Colorado shot a 307 in the final round of play, giving them an overall score of 915, keeping them in 10th place.  Denver won the team competition with a three day total of 878, 14-over par.  They posted a decisive 16-stroke margin over the runners up from UC Davis, who shot an 894, 30-over par.

“Once we get back and get caught up, we'll get started at the end of this week doing a lot of putting and short game work and then just use this tournament as a lot of lessons learned,” said CU coach Anne Kelly.  “We have to learn.  I'd rather have a week where we win and a week where we don't play so well as a learning experience, instead of mediocre golf all the time.  We aren't panicking, we just had a bad tournament.”

Freshman Julie Kim finished as Colorado's top golfer, taking 21st with a three day total of 225, nine shots over par.  She opened the tournament with a school record-tying score of 67, which was the best round of the tournament, then shot 77 in Monday's afternoon round.  She slipped again Tuesday with an 81.

Kim was followed by classmate Dominique Pytlewski, who played a consistent 75-76-75 tournament, good for 226 and 22nd place.

“We had pretty solid play all week from Dominique, which is good,” said Kelly.  “Julie had a tough day. We played the back nine first and she had a tough time with that.  Number 11 ate our lunch for the week; we were probably 20-over par on it as a team.”

Junior Lindsay Senger and sophomore Lindsay Caljouw each rallied for their best rounds of the tournament. Caljouw shot a 75 to give her a three day total of 232 and a tie for 43rd place, while Senger shot a 76.  That gave her a total of 235 and a tie for 52nd place.  Senior Hannah Hoch shot an 81 today, giving her a total of 239 and placing her in a tie for 69th.

Colorado will have the next two weeks off from tournament play and then will be back on the course for their home tournament, the Heather Farr Memorial/CU Invitational.  The tournament will tee off on Monday, Oct. 2 with 36 holes at the Omni Interlocken Resort.  On Tuesday, Oct. 3 they will play the final 18 holes.

“We are excited to play a tournament at home,” said Kelly.  “We love the support we get out there at the Omni and from our department.  We love the support, we get to sleep in our own beds, and it's nice to be familiar with your surroundings. We are excited about it.”
