Chiulli Wins 1,000-Meter Title At Big 12 Championship

February 24, 2007 | Track and Field

AMES, Iowa ?Anthony Chiulli won his first Big 12 individual title in the 1,000-meter run on the second day of action at the 2007 Big 12 Indoor Track & Field Championships at the Leid Recreational Facility on the campus of Iowa State University.

Chiulli's time was 2:21.82, a personal record. It became the second fastest time in school history, just shy of the record of 2:21.50 set by Rick Musgrave in 1975. Chiulli also set the stadium record with the mark. The previous record had been 2:22.31, set by Scott Peters, Florida, on Feb. 13, 1993.

“I feel really good,” Chiulli said. “I finished third two years ago and second last year, so this was the next logical step. I felt very good today. I ran out front, which was the game plan, and I never looked back. We've had a rough winter, but I felt very strong today.”

“I am thrilled with Anthony,” head coach Mark Wetmore said. “Not only did he break the stadium record in the 1,000, and not only did he fun a huge pr, he led the whole way and did all of the work himself. He backed it up with the fastest relay spilt (on the 4x400) on the team. He is really ready, but unfortunately there is no 1,000-meter run in the NCAA's and he has to go somewhere next weekend to qualify.”

Stephen Pifer ran the mile in just over four minutes (4:00.86) to finish second. Pifer led for 1,200 meters before Leonel Manzano, Texas, moved ahead. Manzano finished in 3:59.78. Pifer's time was the second fastest time in CU history. Pifer is the school record holder with a mark of 3:59.55.

Pifer also took fourth in the 3k. He passed three people in the final 300-meters to finish in 8:10.22.

“I thought overall I had a better weekend that I had in Seattle, Wash,” Pifer said. “I am pretty happy with my mile time. It's the second fastest that I have ever run the mile. And then I was able to jump back into the 3k. This is my last Big 12 Indoors and it would have been nice to come away with a title, but this is the best I could come up with today.”

“Anybody who watched Stephen's race saw that his time was basically a solo time trial, with 100 meters to go,” Wetmore said. “It's a tough way to run that fast. I sure hope it gets him in there (NCAA's), so he doesn't have to go anywhere.”

Jenny Barringer finished second in the women's mile. She recorded the third-best time in CU history at 4:41.22 and provisional qualifying mark for the national meet. Barringer's time was just short Sara (Gorton) Slattery's mark of 4:40.35, set at the 2002 Big 12 Indoor Championships in Lincoln, Neb. Mary Decker is second on the CU list at 4:41.21, set in 1978.

Barringer also took third in the 3,000-meter run. She completed the race in 9:19.65, once again behind Texas Tech's Sally Kipeygo, who set a Big 12 Indoor Meet record at 9:11.41. Barringer has finished second to Kipeygo four times this year.

“I felt both of them were strong efforts,” Barringer said. “I went out there and did my best for CU and tried to score as many points as possible. It's a little disappointing. I wish I could have gotten a couple of qualifying times. I wish I could have gotten a championship, but racing against Sally is tough. It means for the rest of my career every title will be worth just a little bit more.”

Barringer accounted for all of Colorado's 14 points at the meet.

“Jenny had a really good weekend,” Wetmore said. “She wasn't healthy. She has a fairly bad head cold. She ran her fastest mile by a lot, one of the fastest at CU. She pr'd in the 3,000; tired from the mile and the cold. She had a great weekend; unfortunately, probably neither of those performances are going to get her into the NCAA. So she has the unpleasant task of getting back on an airplane next week and going somewhere to do it.”

Ryan Campbell earned a fourth-place finish in the 60-meter dash. He finished with a mark of 6.79. Marcus Pugh, Oklahoma, won the event with a time of 6.68. Campbell took seventh in the 200-meter dash, recording a time of 21.18.

“Ryan had a great performance this weekend,” assistant coach Brandon Couts said. “He made the finals in two events and scored points. I think he is a little disappointed in his finishes, but still ran well. He has been very consistent this season and made improvements from last year.”

“Ryan scored in both the 60 and the 200, which he told me he was going to do,” Wetmore said. “I think he moved up a position or so from his ranking coming into the meet. He had a good weekend. As I said in the team meeting, he's run his absolute fastest times of the year (at Air Force), but they (his marks this weekend) were his second fastest in the 60 and the 200. And that is down here in the thick air of sea-level. He should be really proud of himself.”

Colorado didn't fair as well in the field events. Ryan Willis had the best finish, coming in ninth in the shot put. He recorded a mark of 53-00.75. James Begley took 10th in the same event with a throw of 51-05.00. Amberly Casey took 19th in the triple jump (38-06.25). Kaitlin Kark led CU in the women's shot put, placing 20th. She recorded a 39-00.50 throw. Hannah Warfield-Ruffatto took 21st (37-10.00) and Chynna McCall was 22nd (37-10.00).

The women's 4x400-meter relay finished 10th out of 11 teams with a 3:54.36 time. The men's 4x400-meter relay took 11th, finishing in 3:15.63. Chiulli ran the fastest leg of the relay, just under 48 seconds despite racing in just one shoe. He ran the third leg and lost his left shoe at the exchange.

The Buffs finished eighth overall on the men's side with 51 points. Nebraska and Texas tied with 93 points for the championship. The women took 11th with 14 points. Texas A&M took the women's title with 141 points.

Some of the Buffaloes will travel to a last chance qualifier next weekend. The NCAA Indoor Track and Field Championships are March 9-10 in Fayetteville, Ark.
