Tennis Begins Fall Season

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. ? The University of Colorado women's tennis team officially began the 2007-08 season at the three-day New Mexico Invitational (Sept. 21-23) on Friday featuring teams from Denver, Minnesota, Northern Arizona and the host University of New Mexico Lobos.
Senior Victoria Almagno, junior Franziska Jendrian, and sophomore Camila Belassi were the big CU winners on day one, each winning a pair of singles matches in their respective singles flights. Belassi secured straight set winners over a pair of opponents in the Singles A Flight, while Almagno and Jendrian took a pair of wins in Singles B.
Ironically, both Almagno and Jendrian will play one another in the Singles A semifinals, Saturday morning.
The Buffaloes also tallied victories by seniors Veera Nurmi and Gleisy Torres Torres, and sophomore Melisa Esposito with 1-1 records.
CU saw the first collegiate tennis matches for fellow freshmen Christiane Pheil and Abbie Probert. However, each fell in their opening match, only to rebound in the consolation bracket with victories.
Saturday consolation match ups include CU teammates Nurmi vs. Torres Torres in Singles A, and Pheil against Probert in Singles B.
In doubles, Almagno and Torres Torres won their opening round match advancing to Saturday's main draw A semifinals, while the duo of Esposito and Jendrian did the same in Group B.
All the matches will be held at The Lobo Tennis Club on both the outside courts as well as inside in the Randy Briggs and First Community Bank Domes. Saturday and Sunday action begins at 8 a.m.
