Almagno Perfect At CU Invite

BOULDER ? University of Colorado senior Victoria Almagno added another singles and doubles victory on Sunday to close out the three-day CU Tennis Invitational with a perfect 6-0 mark helping the host Buffaloes dominate play at the South Campus Courts featuring teams from Colorado State, Northern Colorado and Oklahoma.

 

CU won 17 of 23 singles matches and eight-of-nine doubles matches over the three-day invite. The Sooners won 15 of 26 singles matches, followed by CSU (7-7) and Northern Colorado (4-19). Four of the CU's six singles losses came against other CU teammates played in consolation back draws.

 

On the doubles court, OU went 6-6, followed by CSU (2-4), and UNC (2-7).

 

Almagno won singles matches in a round-robin format defeating two opponents from Oklahoma and Northern Colorado on Friday; another Sooner on Saturday; and on Sunday, defeated a UNC player. In doubles, Almagno teamed with junior Franziska Jendrian on Sunday, and on Friday teamed up with freshman Christiane Pheil for another doubles tally.

 

Pheil was almost perfect herself establishing a 4-1 mark (three singles, one doubles tally), only falling in three-set match against CSU's Anette Pohjalainen, 4-6, 7-6(3), 6-2, Sunday afternoon.

 

Almagno's play helped establish her in a three-way tie on the team with the most victories joining Jendrian and sophomore Melisa Esposito with identical 6-2 records.

 

On a larger scale, Jendrian won her 40th career doubles match, and in singles, senior Gleisy Torres Torres won her 59th career match moving into 19th place on the school's all-time victories list.

 

CU is idle until the ITA Central Regional in October.
