Tennis Trio Advances to Falcon Semifinal Rounds

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. ? The University of Colorado women's tennis team won seven of 11 singles matches on the first day of the two-day USAFA Invitational, Friday. Joining CU along with the Falcons are Colorado State, Denver, Northern Colorado, Tulsa and Wyoming.
After receiving a first round bye in the Round of 16, seniors Monica Milewski and Franziska Jendrian each advanced to their respective singles semifinals with victories. Milewski won her fifth straight match of the fall season defeating Wyoming's Sarah Summerfield, 6-1, 6-0 in the Falcon Draw, while Jendrian escaped Colorado State's Tori Arneson, pulling out a three-set match 6-0, 5-7, 6-4 in the Silver Draw.
Both Milewski and Jendrian will play in Saturday's semifinals.
Also in the Falcon Draw, CU saw junior Melisa Esposito advance to the semifinals with a pair of triumphs, defeating Manuela Santos of Northern Colorado, 6-1, 6-1 in the Round of 16, then followed with another straight-set winner over Lauren Strasburger of Colorado State, 6-1, 6-2.
Esposito advances to the lower half of the Falcon Draw semis.
In other singles action, junior Camila Belassi and freshman Madie Kern each achieved a 1-1 mark on the day. Belassi opened with a 6-1, 6-1 winner over Greer Satherlie of Colorado State, 6-4, 6-1, then fell in the quarterfinals to Tulsa's Marta Marcinkowska, 6-4, 6-2.
Kern rallied from a set down and defeated Tulsa's Carolina Beaulieu 2-6, 6-4, 6-3 in the Black Singles Draw, then lost in round two to Shelley Johnson of Air Force, 6-2, 6-2.
In doubles, CU's Belassi/Milewski and Esposito/Jendrian each received first round byes in the Silver Draw, then each advanced to the semis with victories.
Belassi and Milewski won their sixth straight match defeating Row/Szatkowska of Tulsa, 8-3, and Esposito and Jendrian cruised to an 8-1 winner over Colorado State's Arneson/Stople.
Saturday's play will begin with doubles at 8 a.m. with semifinal and final rounds, followed by singles semifinal, finals and consolation play.
