Jendrian, Milewski Each Win Singles Draws
October 04, 2008 | Tennis
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. ? Senior Franziska Jendrian earned a pair of championships Saturday afternoon in day two of the Air Force Invitational, winning the Silver Singles Draw then teaming with Melisa Esposito to win the main draw doubles final.
The Buffaloes were one of six other schools participating at the Air Force Invite along with the host Falcons, Colorado State, Denver, Northern Colorado, Tulsa and Wyoming.
Senior Monica Milewski won her second straight singles title of the fall and her seventh consecutive match defeating Tulsa's Alexandra Kichoutkin 6-3, 6-1 in the finals. Milewski won the main draw singles title at the CU Invitational two weeks ago. The Park Ridge, Ill. native defeated Northern Colorado's Tabitha Knop, 7-5, 6-1 in the semifinals.
Jendrian won a pair of matches against the University of Tulsa en route to the Silver Singles title. She defeated Jie Zeng 7-5, 3-6, 6-3 in the semifinals, then in straight sets defeated Marta Marcinkowska, 6-2, 6-4 in the finals.
With their trio of singles victories over the two-day event, Jendrian (66 victories) and Milewski (64) rank 19th and 20th place, respectively on the CU's all-time wins list.
In consolation singles play, Camila Belassi reached the winners' circle twice on Saturday defeating Northern Colorado's Tiffany Knop, 6-1, 6-1 and Tori Arneson of Colorado State, 6-4, 7-5.
In the Blue Singles consolation draw, freshman Michala Hedelund Jensen also won a pair of matches, both in straight sets over Lauren Mulhern (Colorado State) 6-2, 6-0 and Shannon Young (Air Force) 6-4, 6-3.
In the doubles main draw it was an all-CU final. After both CU teams cruised to semifinal wins by 8-1 tallies, the team of Esposito and Jendrian rallied to defeat fellow teammates Belassi and Milewski, 8-6. It was rematch of the same main draw final played two weeks ago in Boulder at the CU Invite when the final score was reversed.
Esposito/Jendrian trailed 6-5, then secured the win with three unanswered points.
Jendrian's three doubles wins over the weekend increases her total to 63, moving her into fourth place on the school's all-time victories list.
Colorado is idle until the ITA Central Regional, Oct. 15-19 in Salt Lake City.
