Tennis Sends Quartet to Singles Semifinals

BOULDER ? The University of Colorado women's tennis team opened the fall season winning 11 of 15 singles matches and five of seven doubles matches in the first day of the three-day CU Invitational featuring five other schools at the South Campus Courts on Friday.
CU is hosting Air Force, Illinois, Northern Colorado, Virginia Tech and Wyoming. Day two begins with singles play on Saturday at 9 a.m. All singles finals will also take place in addition to doubles.
Overall it was a solid day for the Buffaloes tennis team in their first showing of the year under sunny skies placing four players in singles semifinals, and another pair in the doubles semis.
In the Gold Singles Draw, senior Monica Milewski won a pair of matches, in addition to junior Camila Belassi and Melisa Esposito will all three moving into the semifinals. Milewski, a two-time All-Big 12 selection won both of her matches in straight sets picking up her 58th and 59th career singles victories.
Belassi also won her matches in straight sets, while Esposito secured her place in the semis with a hard-fought quarterfinal win over Marisa Lambropoulos of Illinois, 6-2, 1-6, 1-0(8).
In the Gold Draw semis, Milewski will play Shivani Dave of Illinois, and in the other it will be a CU match up between Belassi and Esposito.
In the Black Draw, sophomore Abbie Probert was the lone Buff to reach the Saturday semifinal round sweeping her two opponents in straight sets. Probert will be matched up against Virginia Tech's Holly Johnson and in the other semifinal, a pair of Hokies battle it out between Shannon Betts against Martha Blakely.
A trio of CU freshmen each won in their collegiate debut as newcomer Madie Kern defeated Carolina Chaix of Wyoming 6-2, 7-6(3) in the Silver Draw first round. Kern, from nearby Broomfield, Colo. went 1-1 on the day, as did senior Franziska Jendrian and sophomore Christiane Pheil.
Freshmen Allison Wahba (Manhattan Beach, Calif.) won her first match in the Black Draw consolation round defeating Northern Colorado's Hannah LaForest, 6-4, 6-1, as did Michala Hedelund Jensen (Frederiksberg, Denmark) over Allie Chermel of Air Force, 6-2, 6-3.
In doubles, the home team placed a pair in the semifinals as Esposito/Jendrian and Belassi/Milewski easily advanced in their first and quarterfinal rounds. Jendrian/Esposito will play the Illini's Allin/Lambropoulos in one semifinal match Saturday, while Belassi/Milewski will play Virginia Tech's Beermann/Blakely.
