Beemer Takes Third in the Pentathlon
January 22, 2010 | Track and Field
BOULDER ? University of Colorado sophomore Brianne Beemer led the Buffs with a third-place finish in the women's pentathlon at the Potts Indoor Invitational on Friday afternoon at Balch Fieldhouse.
Beemer finished the pentathlon with a personal record 3,444 points, surpassing her previous best of 3,209 points, which she set at the Air Force Duals in 2009. Beemer started off the day with a time of 9.59 seconds in the 60-meter hurdles. She tied a career-best with a mark of 5 feet, 4.25 inches in the high jump and followed that mark up with a throw of 32-08.25 in the shot put. Beemer's best long jump was 15-07.75.
But the best event for Beemer in past pentathlons has been the 800-meter run, which today proved to once again be her strongest event. She won the race in 2:17.56 (857 points), which propelled Beemer from fifth-place to third-place. It was also the third fastest time ever by a CU combined events athlete. Colorado State's Kristen Kulger won with 3,627 points.
“I felt really good today,” Beemer said. “It was really good to see our team perform the way that they did this afternoon. We had great synergy and Coach Malone really helped to settle us down.”
Fellow sophomores Katie Dreher and Alyssa Frank finished fourth and fifth, respectively. Dreher and Frank also recorded PRs in the pentathlon. Dreher notched 3,347 points while Frank recorded 3,293 points.
“I couldn't ask for two better teammates that are my age and class,” Beemer said about Dreher and Frank. “We really work hard together and push each other. And it's really neat to have the younger women on the team that we can help push.”
The women were competing in a field of 16 athletes; one of the largest combined events meets in Colorado and only six of those athletes were Buffs. The only other time the Buffs have competed against this many athletes would be at the Big 12 Conference Championships.
“We (Beemer, Dreher and Frank) were talking about that during our cool down and how great it was to have so many people competing and at such a high level of competition. It was a neat atmosphere to have here today at our home track,” Beemer said.
In the men's heptathlon, a two-day event, CU junior Alex Von Hagen is in second place with a personal best 2,796 points after the first four events. Von Haven recorded a trio of second place finishes in the 60-meter dash (7.29), long jump (21-11.75) and high jump (6-02.75) and was third in the shot put (36-08.25). Wyoming's Jay Petsch is in first place, but is only 12 points ahead of Von Hagen (2,808).
“I did better in every event today than I did at Big 12s last year, except for high jump,” Von Hagen explained. “To start off like this is very exciting. We've been training really hard as a group. We are all very focused and are having fun.”
Teammate Eddie Taylor finished the day in third place with 2,588 points. Taylor also had a strong day as he PR'd in all four events. He was took third in the 60 (7.34), long jump (20-01.50) and high jump (6-00.50) and was fourth in the shot put (36-02).
“Eddie had a really good day and we are definitely going to compete against each other really hard tomorrow,” Von Hagen said.
In the men's pole vault competition, sophomore James Nixon placed second by reaching 15-01.00.
“I am absolutely impressed with each athlete and everyone involved with our meet today,” assistant coach Lindsey Malone said. “We hosted a top notch competition with fantastic performances across the field. I enjoyed getting to see our team in action after so much hard work and preparation.
“We have an outstanding team with great leadership from our upperclassmen. Our returners Brianne, Katie, Alyssa, Alex and Eddie set the standard very high today for the first combined event meet of the season. Each athlete had numerous personal bests and even posted some marks which typically score at the Big 12 Conference Championship meet. James had another solid performance in the vault and our freshman crew Holly (Odneal), Catie( Grandi), Renata (Garbowski), Erin (Overcash) and Brock(Emory) set new personal records all over the board for their first combined event in college. I am exceptionally pleased with each athlete's competitive composure today and I am greatly looking forward to what lies ahead for this season.”
The meet will resume on Saturday, January 23, with the men's weight throw and the women's shot put at 10 a.m. The track events will begin at 1 p.m. with the men's heptathlon 60-meter hurdles.
