Von Hagen Wins Heptathlon
January 23, 2010 | Track and Field
BOULDER — University of Colorado junior Alex Von Hagen won the heptathlon at the Potts Indoor Invitational Saturday afternoon in a Balch Fieldhouse record of 4,995 points.
Von Hagen started the day with a time of 8.97 seconds in the 60-meter hurdles and then recorded a height of 13 feet, 5.25 inches in the pole vault. He was 113 points out of first place (behind Wyoming's Jay Petsch) with his premiere event, the 1,000-meter run, remaining. Von Hagen timed the race perfectly, finishing in 2:46.59 for 802 points, to leap-frog Petsch by just 21 points. Petsch crossed the line in 2:59.64.
“As a group we are pretty good at the 1,000 and 1,500, so it is kind of like an ace up our sleeves,” Von Hagen said. “I felt really confident going into the last event since I did know the point differential and that I just had to beat him by 11 seconds.”
The point total is also the third-best in CU history and surpassed his previous personal best by 28 points.
“Last year I started the season with 4,560 points and now I'm over 400 points ahead of that, so I'm not really too concerned about missing 5,000 points by five points since this was a PR,” he said. “I competed well in a lot of events and even though there were a lot of points left on the table, I'm really happy.”
Eddie Taylor also had a great performance for CU in the heptathlon with 4,683 points (third overall). He recorded a time of 9.32 in the 60 hurdles and jumped 13-09.25 in the pole vault. Taylor crossed the finish of the 1,000 in 2:51.98. Brock Emory did well in his first heptathlon with 4,081 points and a sixth-place finish.
“Our men competed well today in the final day of the heptathlon,” assistant coach Lindsey Malone said. “Alex, Eddie and Brock tallied up new personal bests in the individual events as well as the overall score. Alex currently holds the top heptathlon mark in the Big 12.
“The fan support in Balch was outstanding and I think it really helped propel many of our athletes to achieve new personal bests.”
For the second year in a row, a CU woman won the shot put at the invitational. Freshman Emily Hunsucker recorded a throw of 41-05.00 on just her third throw of the day to take first place in the event. Hunsucker's throw was a foot farther than Colorado State's Hilary Fraser, whose best toss was 40-05.00. She also recorded a ninth-place in the weight throw with a season best of 40-08.75.
“This feels great,” Hunsucker said. “It feels nice to be able to back in the swing of things with my technique and a couple of other things that coach and I were working on. I had a really good practice on Wednesday. I feel like I had a breakthrough day today in both the weight throw and the shot.”
“Emily did great today,” assistant coach Casey Malone said. “She had two breakthroughs in both the shot and the weight, technically speaking, and I'm so proud of her. She was able to translate some of the things we have been working on in practice and carried that over into competition, which isn't always an easy thing to do. It was really fun to see her do this as a freshman and it's a great sign of things to come.”
Redshirt freshman Dane Chobanian took second place in the men's shot put for the Buffs. He launched a throw of 50-05.50. The mark was a season best as he had recorded a mark of 44-04.00 at Air Force last weekend.
“Dane had some breakthroughs technically speaking as well today,” Malone said. “There is still a lot of room for improvement with him with what he needs to achieve technically, but today got him one step closer and that was exciting.”
Kaity Kark also recorded a second-place in the weight throw (50-11.50). She recorded the best throw of her series in her third attempt. Not to be outdone on the men's side, Trey Mullen took second place in the weight. His series was great as he truly got better with every throw and recorded his top mark of 53-05.75 was in his final attempt.
“In the weight throw Trey and Kaity did a fantastic job representing the upper class throwers at CU,” Malone said. “Both had strong performances and were getting better throughout the competition. I'm really proud”
The jumps events were also good for the Buffs. Kathleen Majewski and Laurisa Canini tied for first with CSU's Ashley Dace at a height of 5-02.25 in the high jump. Jake Timmons and Jason DeWitt tied for second in the men's high jump at 6-04.25.
Tyler Thompson won the men's long jump after recording a leap of 22-05.00 on his final attempt. He was also second in the triple jump (43-04.50). Danielle Reagin placed second in the women's long jump (16-10.00) with her first jump of the day.
'The combined events and jumps athletes earned many first-place finishes with Alex in the heptathlon, Tyler Thompson in the long jump, and a first place tie in the high jump for Kathleen Majewski and Laurisa Canini,” Lindsey Malone said. “Overall each athlete brought a competitive and positive attitude which translated into a very successful meet”.
On the track, the Buffs also looked strong. Freshman Matt Biegner won the mile in 4:26.90 and the top nine finishers wore black and gold.
“I feel great,” Biegner said. “This was my first indoor race for the Buffs and I'm pretty happy with it. It was fun running with all of my teammates. I always feel like I have something to prove, no matter what race I'm running. I'm glad that I did well and we all (CU) finished in a tight pack and it was a good day.”
Shalaya Kipp won the women's mile run in 5:13.93.
Sydney Davis led the sprinters with a first-place finish in the 200-meter dash and a runner-up position in the 60. She ran times of 27.08 and 8.10. Jennifer Gruver, who also ran those same events, was fourth in the 200 (28.10) and fifth in the 60 (8.37). Joi Windham was the top female finisher in the 600-yard run, clocking a time of 1:27.92 for second place.
“Sydney won her first collegiate race today and it's always nice to get that one out of the way,” assistant coach Drew Morano said. “Everyone improved from the last time that we ran. The women are taking steps forward instead of backwards, which is very important.”
Javen Correia had the top performance by a male sprinter. He took top honors in the 60-meter hurdles when he crossed the finish in 8.56. Matthew McCathran was second in the 600 (1:13.24) and Quinton Dodson led the Buffs in the 60 (6.94).
“On the men's side, throughout the team, everyone ran very tough,” Morano said. “We showed that we are still learning to run our respective races, but once again there were improvements made and we are heading in the right direction. The runners that competed unattached ran great times for this time of year. We look forward to having them in CU uniforms soon.”
The Buffs will be back in action next Friday and Saturday, January 29 and 30 at the Air Force Duals/Combined Events Meet at the U.S. Air Force Academy and the UW Invitational in Seattle, Wash.
